This is defenitly my favorite Lynch film after the flawless Mulholland Drive. I just love everything about this film, so i wanted to try & spark some newfound appreciation for it on here given the fact that this film seems to be pretty underrated in contrast to some other stuff in his filmography
Also, shout out to the mystery man, we may not like to hear what he has to say about us, but we better take notes
After recently finishing his filmography and having rewatched my favorites that i was already familair with (bar the non-Lynchian ones and FWWM for obvious reasons), i'm pumped to finally see the Twin Peaks series which i saved for last
Will i be just as astonished by this series just like the rest of the huge fanbase this series has was after watching it? Or should i keep my expectations low after already having seen so much of his work?
i need to finish it
i was really in love with it but i forgot why i stopped
idk if i could like this more than blue velvet tho bc muholland drive and blue velvet is 1/2
Love this film
Gave me a f***ing headache after but loved it. Patricia Arquette was…

With Twin Peaks it’s best to know first that it’s 50% Lynch and 50% Mark Frost. If you like Lynch there’s a great chance you’ll like this he does some of his best work on the episodes he directed (there’s 6 in the classic series, FWWM and all of S3). There’s a good chance by the end of it all you are as astonished but who knows everyone’s different
But yeah just head in with no expectations at first. The original series is much more soap opera like with increasing hints of the surreal side of Lynch.

Thanks, i figured i would just watch everything Twin Peaks, meaning the first 2 seasons, then FWWM and then The Return. But i'm not much of a TV series guy, and i've heard people say season 2 gets pretty bad at points. Anything i can skip since its 22 episodes i believe? Or should i just sit those out anyway

It gave me a headache too on my first watch, but after rewatching it i immediately seem to understand most of the scenes
Maybe that's why Mulholland Drive & Lost Highway are my favorites, because those are the 2 Lynch films where i really seemed to figure the mystery out for myself, at least most of it
I don't think i've ever found a director where uncovering these mysteries have felt SO rewarding
i need to finish it

For some reason i don't love Blue Velvet nearly as much as most other people. Still a really good film but i enjoy most of his other films more, personally.
It's one of the few were the film gets less interesting for me when i start to dig deeper for answers. Same thing with Enemy by Villeneuve. It's a great film as well, but once you get to the bottom of what everything means it just leaves you feeling ''aight thats cool i guess'' whereas with Mulholland Drive for example it's just more layered imo and it lingers in my mind much longer
this movie has such an intoxicating atmosphere, like most of Lynch's work of course but this one really sucks you in

nah for blue velvet i feel like i still think ab it
i’m in love with the idea of kyle being this constant “everyman hero” in lynch’s films
and i find it funny that here this archetype really gets dissected, as he is literally the a***ogue for the viewer when he witnesses the rape by dennis hopper. idk i just think there’s so much to think about with the idea of “watching” / witnessing violence and the dichotomy between wanting to stop violence while being seduced by it
i also am finally understanding laura dern’s chatacter
but i completely see what u mean by not really caring about the later half
I need to rewatch this
It’s was in my top 3 but slipped out since I started going through all Lynches other stuff.
The mystery man still haunts my dreams

oh man....
muholland drive is just too goated but man
fire walk with me might be true 2nd favorite now that i think about it
i love the series, esp season 2 finale - season 3. feels like some of the best of his work.
but fire walk with me might be one of the most underrated movies of all time. what it says about the cycles of trauma and repression is just so beautifully done. the ceiling fan still haunts me

Oh yeah i feel you i meant that solely as my own experience!
I've heard theories about the freudian elements in Blue Velvet and the characters representing different part of the psychosexual development stage but it's just less interesting to me than for example in MH, how we get to explore the subconscious mind while dreaming of somebody who's full of guilt, anxiety, jealousy etc. And how the characters in said dream mirror the ones in her waking life. I feel like Mulholland Drive overall really tackles everything i love about Lynch and wraps it up better than any of his other feature lengths.
Or how in Lost Highway Lynch explores the way someone would bend his reality/memories (in this case fed by schizophrenia) to surpress the feeling of guilt that comes with killing another person, and how that action (literally in the film) could change who you are.
It all comes down to personal preference and i just feel like those films have more to offer for me on that level. But i must admit that Blue Velvet does have the best theme song out of all of his films

i can't wait to finally see what the Twin Peaks hype is all about hoping my gf can enjoy it too. Gonna watch it with her but she has had quite the trouble interpreting his work before so we'll see
You should’ve started with Twin Peaks
How so, you think i'm gonna be let down in the first 2 seasons considering he got to expand on his style later on or? Cause that's the only thing i'm a bit afraid of after years of hearing how it's the greatest tv show ever
I just never watch series and the only reason why i wanna watch TP is because i fell in love with his filmography like this

twin peaks is the best bc it’s very campy so u don’t have to take it serious. also agreed with everything u said in the orevious post
i need to finish lost highway bc i loved that discussion of manipulating ur memories to rid urself of guilt

For me it goes
1 - Mulholland Drive
2 - Lost Highway
3 - Eraserhead
4 - Inland Empire
5 - Blue Velvet
6 - Wild At Heart
7 - Dune (the only one i dislike but it's been a while, others all range from great to masterpiece)
Haven't seen The Straight Story, FWWM & The Elephant Man
You should def give Lost Highway another watch, because rewatching Lynch always skyrockets my appreciation for that particular film like with no other filmmaker

Fire Walk With Me
Mulholland Drive
Elephant Man
Lost Highway
Blue Velvet
Eraserhead
I still need to watch the straight story, inland empire and wild at heart
I feel like the reason I have eraserhead and lost highway so low is because I definitely didn’t get all of those on first watch. But it’s Lynch so I always get more from them on repeat watchings

Yeah i feel you, it's been the case for me as well on every first watch. But for MD, LH & Eraserhead i feel are pretty ''straight forward'' if you go into a rewatch with some sort of idea of what to look out for

S2 for like an 6-8 episode stretch completely loses its way because Frost and Lynch momentarily left the show. Honestly i'd say watch it cus the very small parts that are worth it still build up a plot point that is important for the whole series. It's bad/goofy but not as bad as people claim and once its over the end episodes of the season are great especially when Lynch directs the last episode
just pushing through it should be fine. i skipped some parts first time i watched it, lowkey regretted it (even though i saw a summary) then watched everything my second run with my gf and yeah i recommend just watching

Because the beauty of Twin Peaks is its absurdness, wackiness, obscure characters mixed with the mystical town. Watching a lot of Lynch before heading into Peaks is softening the blow of all of those characteristics because those styles are in his movies too. I’m sure you’ll still enjoy it because it’s Lynch/Frost on x10.

Nah i think you're fine its just TP is its own thing for a lot of the original series...and i mean that in a good way there's really nothing like it and the style is so off but interesting.
Its good to know the way Lynch thinks and how he's building the mystery especially for FWWM and The Return. A lot of people only got into it after seeing prior Lynch work anyways
