    Gantz - 5/10

Honestly, the absurdity was pretty fun but that last arc kinda jumped the shark and ruined everything lmao. The artwork sucked: so many backgrounds are just filtered photos and 90% of the time the characters looked like 3D CGI models who were flattened onto the page. As action scenes became more complicated it became obvious Oku can't draw them to save his life: it's nearly impossible to follow what's happening. Story-wise you could tell he had no idea what he was doing either since a BUNCH of plot points were brought up and literally ignored the next chapter (e.g. clones, vampires, brother, etc.)

I wish the actual execution of this was good because premise-wise it's a really f***ing fun manga.

The core Gantz team toward the middle of the story is still squad goals though.

And a special shoutout to my boy Cherry who is one of the few characters in the story to have a complete character arc.

    Still salty 8 years later.

Read this manga called Tokage No Ou about 8 years ago.
It was short and was based on a 5 volume light novel series.

The Manga only covered volue 1/5. And The light novel series itself is SO obscure that it's never been translated to English apparently.

Been pondering this idea of just stealing the plot for myself and writing my own followup

Would be more fun and less painful than actually learning japanese to finish the story.

This is the most bizarrely fascinating and unintentionally(?) hilarious series I've read in a while. Imagine the premise of Parasite, but instead of an airborne parasite trying to crawl into your ear, it's a sexually transmitted parasite.

Unfortunately this thread has to compete with the other much more frequented thread which should be more focused about anime. Gonna try to post about manga only here

    Ashita no joe

10/10, one of the greatest experiences ive ever had in any medium, still shaking 10 minutes after finishing this masterpiece. One of the most important manga in history, not only in its medium but in japanese society as well. This is the story of an orphan homeless thug barely scraping by in the poorest parts of post ww2 tokyo who rebels to the classist rich who look down on him and his people. This is the story of a immature boy growing up to a man with the weight of his people on his back and his burning passion pushing him forward to be the greates boxer in the world. Setting aside the social aspect, it also tackles passion and rivalry in sports, with joe and rikiishi being a primal example of what's the highest peak sport can reach. I could go on and on praising this masterpiece but its importance in japanese society and pop culture to this day speaks for itself. Please read this, even if its 50 years old it still reads like a modern manga and if you liked megalobox especially you have to read this since the anime is a tribute to ashita no joe
