    let's get into it.

First things first I love Cera I think he's a great actor and I'm not saying he delivered a bad performance as Scott. But I do still think casting him as Scott was a mistake. Hear me out...

On the surface, the Scott Pilgrim series is a little nerd culture + band culture story abt a guy who has to fight seven evil dudes to date some girl. But its really a story about a guy learning that while his superficial characteristics might get him some dating success, real love takes more than whats on the surface. At the start of the series, he gets girls through his surface level characteristics (good at fighting, in a band, kinda cute, etc.). Dating Ramona teaches him that stuff like that might get u some action, but a real relationship takes way more beneath the surface work.

We see Scott's perspective shift from surface level s*** (he thinks envy left him because of his haircut) to introspective insightful s*** (he defeats Gideon by learning to love himself. It's quite a charming story.

The problem is, for Scott's arc to make sense, he has to be working within that superficial realm of dating at the start. In other words, the audience needs to understand that at the start of the story, Scott gets girls, yes, but its for the "wrong" reasons (all surface level stuff). In the comics that works because in the cartoon style, yeah he's a fine looking guy, and we see that he's not some wimp, he's really good w his fists. In the movie, yeah Scott does look like a total wimp. the amount of people I've known who say they can't stand the movie because they don't understand how any girls in the movie even talk to him drives me crazy. To the uninitiated moviegoer, Scott isn't seen as a guy who gets play from superficial s***, he's seen as a poorly written nerd self-insert who gets all the girls for "reasons".

The movie's f***ing great, Edgar Wright is a good ass director. But its undeniable, casting Scott as a wimpy (and frankly kinda fugly) guy is a fundamental misrepresentation of the character, and it definitely detracts from the story. Like I said, I've known too many people who decide they hate Scott pilgrim vs the world because they read Scott as a poorly written lame nerd self-insert.

me neither thats not my point

he did a great job acting and its still a good movie

but a good chunk of the story is handicapped when the guy who's supposed to be read as a guy who pulls girls off superficial stuff has no superficial stuff

    did u read the post.

I agree he was great in the movie

but he was the wrong person for the role coming from the perspective of adapting the story well

  • Sure, in the context of the originals but as a standalone film he was perfect imo.. down to where he was born/raised

I thought it fit okay specially when you’re suppose to think Scott Pilgrim is a lowlife weirdo dating a high schooler while he’s in his mid twenties. Never saw him as some chad that could pull any girl he wants

the point is at the start he is an a******

which is why in the comics he's not also a fugly wimp

the idea is that he's gotten thru his dating life up to this point off superficial s*** (beats up ppl to win Kims heart, thinks envy leaves him for his hair, etc). Yes he's an a****** but the plot still makes sense because he's a somewhat attractive a******.

it makes way less sense if he's an a****** and a fugly uber-nerd. Now he doesn't read as a character intended to be an a******, he's read as a self-insert who gets everything for no apparent reason.

It almost sounds like ur saying "Scott pilgrim (the fictional character) is an a****** and got what he deserved by being adapted into a total nerd" which is like... bro u kno he's not real right? like ur aware of that right? he's not a real person who's affected by anything that happens in the real world?

in short the point is what's beneath the surface matters more. On the surface Scott is kinda lame but he's still somewhat attractive. Beneath the surface he's a total d***.
