just finished
hill house > midnight mass >>> bly manor
think hill house highs were a bit higher and it was more consistent, this was still really really good
wish it dropped weekly bc now im already done
Just finished. I thought it started out creepy and great but ended up being absolutely terrible. Might be my least favourite of his work tv wise... Bly Manor being a close second.
Some of the writing (esp the monologues) and acting are shockingly bad.
I feel the exact opposite about the writing and acting. I think this is arguably some of the strongest writing he's worked with and it really feels like summary of the ethos carried through his whole career
2 episodes left and I don't like it. I keep getting bored as f*** all the time. Still gonna finish it I guess.

Seriously? Erin and Riley's monologues were so overwritten and cliched and their acting wasn't that great either esp Erin.
Monsignor and Bev killed it though.

We need more sincerity in media and this show is sincere, and very well written for Flanagan's themes. I dont see how its overwritten

It's not that I have a problem with sincerity. It's just that I found the execution to be unnecessarily wordy/overwritten/cliched. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
Wow. This show was amazing. What kind of taste do you guys have in movies and shows lmao
This s*** a classic. Flanagan becoming one of my goats ngl. He slipped with Bly Manor but Hill House and Midnight Mass are just top notch storytelling. You can claim the dialogue and all that is cliched, but got damn this s*** is so f***ing layered. It just blows my mind

only saw the theatrical cut in the cinema but that s*** was so good. definitely need to do a shining/doctor sleep double feature sometime

Didn’t even know there’s a director’s cut of it. Is it that much better than theatrical?

Fasho. I might just do the shining/doctor sleep director’s cut double feature too

It's not so much that the dialogue is cliche but that it just goes on and on and on...they bill these as horror series but there's very little horror it's just bleak story and characters with silly to awful acting at times...im 4 episodes deep into Midnight Mass and wondering why I'm even bothering like some things here and there are intriguing but just feels like a massive drag with a slightly interesting set up...felt the same about Hill House tho it was at least quite a bit spookier this reminds me more of Bly Manor which was just overly talky and went on and on (and I didn't even finish the damn thing)...I enjoyed Hush and Dr Sleep tho

I feel that. I guess I’m just biased, because the dialogue holds a lot of weight to me (just because of personal bouts with religion and belief) so it hits close to home. The parallels and even symbology shown and referred to in the show in conjunction with the Bible is what I find most interesting. Plus I think this is just a super fresh and interesting take on vampires.
I will agree that this prob shouldn’t be labeled horror, because this is prob the least scariest thing Flanagan’s done.

It just feels all over the place...the horror elements that are there I really enjoy but like with a lot of Flanagans more recent stuff he seems more interested in relationships and addiction and I guess I just prefer my horror a little more direct and simple idk...I was raised Catholic so I get the appeal from that perspective but like in ep 4 when Riley and the teacher have that damn near 10 min long conversation about what happens when you die...it just felt forced in for the religion element
