MGS is the worst exemple because even though it has a ton of cutscenes, the gameplay in the series has always been cutting edge and fun and different with each instalment and the story is used to expend the gameplay and the gameplay is used to expend the story
and the story is used to expend the gameplay and the gameplay is used to expend the story
you mean exactly like the last of us?
this argument is the same as "based nippon keeps politics out of their games"
yes, there is a problem with certain videogames, specifically in the west, that make a conceited effort to resemble more respected mediums in the hope of legitimacy and outside approval, but one can't just look at gameplay systems from a distance, see a familiar pattern like the one you laid out in the op, and declare said game a "movie game" without thinking about its systems in context of narrative and theme, you know... that thing directors like Kojima, Taro, et al, are so praised for. i think God of War is legitimately a very bad game but that's just because it applies trends set by things like Resident Evil 4, The Last of Us, Dark Souls, Ico, etc etc in a way that never truly gels, not to mention how boring its aesthetics and core gameplay loop is. i just think it's useless and reductive to group every game made by a AAA studio together in this way without taking a deeper look at the things its doing and perhaps why it is doing those things.

Japan does have politics in their games, it's just cultural differences that we are oblivious to so it's seen as implicit, rather well executed and isn't based in the marketing where it can be polarizing. This criticism isn't only aimed at Last of Us so you need to kill that narrative that I'm gunning only for it. Again these games can exist in this space and I have much respect for that craft that goes into it it's just not for me and I find them overrated, that's it. Simple.

Ain't nobody getting "bodied" get the f*** outta here Vicky
no offense but people who say s*** like "movie game" usually don't know what they're talking about, esp when it comes to games like TLOU where its story is fleshed out through gameplay systems just as much as it is through cutscenes
