Me and my girl are going to Rome, right? (long story, I don't want to go into it)

Apparently there have been constant protest and strikes going on as a result the Israeli/Palestine thing, and also something about local union mistreatment and low wages.

Its left me and girlfriend worried that it might not be the best time to be going over there, but the money has already been spent and our flight is next Monday.

I tried doing my own independent research, and couldn't come up with much. So I ended up going on several subreddits looking for some general advice (yeah yeah, I know).

For the sake of, I don't know, being thorough I guess? I mentioned being a "Black American Couple" in the thread title, and as a result all the responses have been very...interesting?

A majority of the comments I get are just people being weirdly defensive over the fact that I felt the need to mention I was black.

My notifications are full of comments like:

"Don’t make yourself a victim no matter where you are. You’re fine."

"Can I ask why you mentioned you were Black?"

"why would being black have anything to do with the situation in Israel right now..."

"I don't understand the specification of your phenotype..."

    Am I reaching here?

Well probably because they never dealt with the same problems as black people. So why pay attention to their ignorance

how would you being black affect the protests/strikes in rome

I was asking two separate questions essentially, the two don't correlate, nor did I insinuate that it did.

What I was trying to convey in my post was:

"Hey! Been hearing that there are a lot of protest going in Rome, will this effect my time at all? Any general concerns or advice I need to be aware?... Black couple btw"

But I guess it didn't get interpreted that way.

Now to me that's jus common sense and is just a matter of always having your passport on hand.

My concern right now is pickpockets and scammers, but outside of that, I hoping to be made aware of things I wouldn't think to consider.

    You know what I mean?

Why you mentioning all that extra s***, lol? Should have straight up just said "Do I have anything to worry about being Black in Rome?"

personally i never got my passport on me unless i’m going to a bar or smth

idk my family always warned me about pickpockets when i’ve gone to europe but it’s never happened to me, but i know of ppl it’s happened to
when i was in areas that are considered red hot i had a backpack with a pocket against my back for valuables, but then i stopped caring and went back to my tote lmao

Their responses make it seem like either your original post was all over the place, they didn't read the post, or they don't see any correlation between being Black and the "unrest" in the world you were talking about. I dunno...It just seem like you could have been more direct and you wouldn't have gotten so many different and weird responses. But you on Reddit so yea...lol.

Yeah there's this weird crowd of white people that want everyone to forcefully act like racism isn't a thing so they hate anytime race is even pointed out. Reddit is full of those kinds

I use Reddit a lot but strictly for information for my interests as far as the interaction goes it’s bottom barrel ngl. Got in an argument with dude one time and he tried to pull my profile s*** and roasted me for being subscribed to Fortnite sub so when I looked through his he was commenting on some sub of niggas beating their d*** to pics on their phone. I literally was in awe this dude tried to call ME weird

It was probably the first thing admittingly, but I don't know I can't but shake this feeling that this wasn't the main incentive here.

It really just comes off like they're mad I mentioned race at all. Like the equivalent of the Starfield Pronouns guy.

Especially that Phenotype comment, gave me "STOP TRYING TO CURRENT DAY ME" vibes.
