"i'm all for doing away with the elitism that plagued mainstream hip-hop discourse in the 2000s and giving wayne his flowers, but it seems like mfs in online rap circles are flipping the script too much. we went from "if pac was still alive, lil wayne would work at mcdonald's" to "pac was never a great lyricist"
    y'all are deluded" - @sky

    think what specifically?

just wanna make sure i'm clear on what you're asking before i answer

any of the “narratives” you posted. you have this idea that opinions you don’t agree with are “narratives” people believe because the internet tells them to and they are sheep. some people won’t like the things you like and just because people agree with them doesn’t mean they’re not forming those opinions themselves.

i'm perfectly fine with people believing any of the narratives i posted

i'm only speaking out against the people who i know haven't actually listened

you can tell because all they do is spout off things other people have said

these sound more like hot/shit takes rather than narratives

i think what makes them narratives is the echoing of these thoughts across forums and social media

especially for the younger people coming up who haven't actually listened

i can speak to this because
    when i was coming up

    i thought jay was trash

    and only talked about money

just like most people said at the time

    "Drake has no classics"

Drake has a classic mixtape. Arguably two of them. His albums are not. They are important and popular. They have some great songs on them. They were never met with the critical reception of a classic from the media hubs or the fan discourse around the genre. Nor have they been positively reappraised. Lots of people saying Drake has a classic album say he has 3 of them. It's his fanboys.

I personally wouldn't argue SFG is a classic. I can see the case for it. It was essentially the debut of a decade changing artist at the moment when he was finding his sound. I don't think the mark of most classic mixtapes is in their consistency or structure or anything as much as their high points and their impact on the genre. Albums are different. It's almost baffling that Drake's tightest, most consistent project is a mixtape (IYRT).

    very interesting

my bad for assuming you meant SFG

    hm...

i feel like if you're reading this is a classic too

    so for me

i've got SFG, Take Care, If you're Reading This

    as his classics

the impact and influence is undeniable
and the music is Drake at his best imo

  • May 16, 2021

what Take Care did for Toronto makes it a classic imo

I can't even take Drake doing a fake southern accent seriously. Guy was dropping some absolutely corny pandering bars. His singing was almost grating compared to how tastefully he tries to be with it now. That early stuff does not hold up on an album scale. Great high points. Awesome B sides. As albums though? Eh

I was never happy to listen a full Drake project until IYRT, and I haven't since either. It was always singles and B sides in rotation more than full releases. Always thought he was too interested in stuff he wasn't very good at whether it be singing or writing about women or whatever.

King of the brag track. Pretty much undefeated on the guest verse. Collab juggernaut. Quotable and caption bars for days. IYRT embodies that. His other records do not.

i think drake's greatness in writing about women (and relationships in general) is capturing the perspective of the male and female feelings of today

as you get older and wiser you realize that what he's saying isn't always that poignant

    but i don't think that's his goal

he wants to be relatable and
so he writes to connect with others

i do think he is much more
profound than he lets on though

you say you’re perfectly fine with people believing these opinions, but there’s some random group of people you won’t elaborate on who think things because the internet tells them to and you can just “tell” when it’s that way. you also say all those opinions are objectively false. it’s clear this is a non issue and you just don’t like some peoples opinions and you have to make up some reason in your head for why people don’t agree with you. who cares
