@op I missed this, what's the source on Nas having writers??

  • Aftermathbws_

The Quintin miller thing was debunked since it was just a sample of his voice on a song (can’t remember the song) but that’s why his name was in the credits. As for jay elec, no one’s ever heard these reference tracks (since they probably don’t exist). And AI is so good now that it would be easy to fake them. No ones writing for Nas. Hypothetically speaking though even if they did this man write Illmatic ffs

Yeah this makes a lot more sense

Hip-hop heads are some naive mfs man

It takes a village to make great songs always has and always will, most studio sessions are a communal experience

The idea of a rapper sitting in his bed rooms writing raps in his notepad is a hs kid’s imagination

    Glad someone said it

I don’t think anyone acts like they “write all their s***” lol. I think rappers claim to be the best because when it’s time to bar up and really rap the are the ones putting it together. Showcasing skill in a verse and making a marketable hit song with a catchy hook and different sections or a highly conceptual song are all different processes.

When Nas is barring up on one of these Hitboy albums or when Drake is going off for 4 min on something like Do Not Disturb that’s really them writing that and coming up with all them flows, schemes, etc. When you hear any of their music that’s their brand, their vision, their product. They are totally justified in saying they are the best at what they do. Being a rapper is hard work, it takes a strong team and a lot of support from other people but ultimately it all revolves around the vision direction and talent of the rapper (unless it’s an industry plant who literally comes up with no ideas themselves but that’s completely different)

I don’t blame the fans for being disappointed but I’m just calling a spade a spade. They are naive and ignorant of the process.

    Lol

  • theres def a balance...but at a certain point we have to put everything aside and only look at the art. if it was better for the art to get lines here and there or a verse then i don't think it's that crazy...again theres a balance lol and I guess its up to the individual fan to draw the line between what is acceptable or not

  • I always assumed he had writers doing his hooks.

I don't mind rappers getting people to write their hooks because I don't expect most rappers to be all that good at writing good catchy hooks. Some rappers' hooks are just them...rapping some more/repeating a part of their verse lol

If you getting cats to write whole verses for you that's pretty crazy

Feel like bouncing lines off people and they hit you with a few lines is very regular though. That's just regular collaboration. S***, it's producers who provide some lines to a rapper so they can better ride the beat they made. Wouldn't say that's the same as having somebody writing or rapping a verse for you and then you take what they gave you and hop in the booth

Unless you have actually tried writing raps, most people just don’t understand how hard it is to come up with stuff that’s meaningful, again and again.

You have your entire life to make those first 2 albums. But after that, you become part of this machine that expects you to put out fresh content every year, year after year. S*** is exhausting and forced.

Collaboration is the only way to unlock some of the inspiration you need to keep up as an artist.

In rap, it’s taboo and I agree to some extent. Especially around sacred names like Jay and Nas.

That being said, what is 6 reference tracks against a hundred songs filled with amazing moments. It doesn’t take away the fact that Nas is an elite lyricist.

It's really not a new concept lol s*** I've ended up co-writing some punk songs for some local bands just by being in the studio during their recording process/studio time.

If you got an idea that can help the making of a song and the artist, band, etc wants to hear it you can end up doing some songwriting frfr

Same here, added some lines to some punk and rap songs during my stint as an engineer. Regular stuff but I can see how easy it is to get caught up in the infallible God MC imagery at an early age and living on with that expectation
