If Billy was really evil then Nathan wouldn’t really be that shocked that Amanda seyfried wants to break them up . He sees their love and believes in it . He is jealous of it . He craves that sense of belonging of someone who loves you with all your demons
it’s interesting how differently everyone sees all this micro-interactions. I personally didn’t read jealousy… but I am also sort of in the camp who thinks Nathan is putting on a bit of a performance trying to invite sexual tension. I don’t read Nathan’s care as anything other than platonic. I’m also curious if the break up mentioned in his letter to her is something that was really happening at the time or if it was introduced to the dialogue to invite romantic undertones or something
Idk how tf y’all are seeing that
This kinda reminds me of The Who’s on first base scene. Maybe your mind just works differently

Oh I don’t think he really likes her I think they plant seeds of it all movie for a more compelling plot . Again we don’t see most of the 34 days . We see 3 hours chopped up that feels like at most a week if you didn’t tell me it was 34 days +

People seem to believe that Amanda’s scenes are faithful re-enactments of real moments and dialogue between Nathan and Liz.
This is a wild miss.
Amanda is not Liz. This is made clear throughout the whole film. Nathan likely made up every scene and line of dialogue himself. It is fiction, like the Hulu series. There is nothing in the second half of the movie that you can trust.
Nathan makes it a point that he can never show you or let you hear his conversations with Liz once she goes to jail. You are relying and trusting him completely that these conversations between him and Liz actually happened and that he is retelling them accurately. He lays it on pretty thick that this would be a stupid thing to trust him on. He cannot be trusted to tell the truth. But, at the same time, maybe he is?? stewing in that uncertainty is intentional.
I’m not even sure Billy ever asked for the money. When Nathan confronts him on it in his office, there are some editing tricks to suggest that Billy’s answers don’t correspond to Nathan’s questions. At one point Billy is drinking a Celsius and soon after is drinking a Spindrift. This is meant to signal that you can’t even trust the film when there aren’t re-enactments.
I didn’t think this was a hot take but I’ve seen so much commentary about things Liz said that were actually said by Amanda. And people treat Amanda’s scenes as if it was Liz herself. This is the most obvious “con” in the film.
They made it clear Amanda is not Liz. The motif of putting words in Liz’s mouth is there throughout the whole film and heavily showcased in the second half.
In short, don’t believe Amanda’s re-enactments are accurate quotes from Liz. In fact, I wouldn’t even believe any of these scenes or moments even happened, at least not in any way close to the way they are portrayed.
Amanda played a character that Nathan wrote. Whether or not any of it is true is an open question but these scenes are DEFINITELY not meant to be accepted at face value.
Transcript of the tweet is in the spoilers. This film is such a rich landscape to explore. I have to think on the above idea some more. What do yall think?
See I was sitting there thinking there is no f\*\*\*ing way Nathan’s memory is that good to where he remembers all of that dialogue word for word verbatim

This is the worst take oat

I don’t think it’s real but it’s quite clearly a thing by the car staring at each other like a kiss moment too
Yeah I didn’t see sexual tension at all. I saw an experienced manipulator potentially using emotional pulls and sympathy baits with her kids to soften her past with Nathan. I think she has actual love for her children ofc, but it is a tool she may be using, I also think Nathan doesn’t hate her. He recognizes the humanity in the small moments with her kids and if it was her tactic I think it worked. Maybe she’s a master master manipulator in all this and it’s all a facade, but right now I lean to what I said above. I don’t see sexual tension at all though
She just playing with her kids bro

I can see that maybe but I feel like that’s just his awkwardness more than getting ready to kiss

Early on in the movie she says she stares to flirt for no reason at all and not even information we needed for the plot
Nathan isn’t jealous of Billy or wants to be with Liz you people are insane
Dog nobody is saying that it’s a clearcut thing of him wanting to be with or get with her like are you not reading everyone in here discussing nuance and artifice etc etc. reading sexual tension and Nathan playing into it =/= him trying to get with this women regardless of if he has actual platonic companionate feelings for her
spoiler in this joke
Movie so good you got Los pollos giving it a 5 star on Letterboxd and saying movie of the year
This was just the right length because I was beginning to drift in that last 10 or so minute stretch...but this was pretty great, glad I caught it. Gonna read through some of the thread tomorrow and see what y'all talmbout.

so sexual tension just from her? idk what you’re saying

I didn’t get sexual tension at all. I think the ocean scene just showed that Nathan learned to genuinely enjoy her company and liked hanging out with her, and played into the idea that he was trying to protect her. Not that he wanted to f\*\*\*
Fielder and Oppenheimer are masters at their craft, and have created one of the most thought-provoking pieces of film I’ve ever experienced in the cinema. throughout its almost three-hour runtime, I was intrigued, bewildered, and astonished by what I was witnessing on screen, especially considering the documentary format, which isn’t my preferred genre.
I implore you, if this is your first time experiencing Fielder, you need to watch Nathan For You, The Rehearsal, and The Curse. you’ll thank me later.
10/10

Trying to be edgy about Nathan was the best decision I ever made.
I seen a thread yearsss back on here talking about “Nathan for you is one of the greatest comedies ever”….and all I seen was some white dork and said “yeah ain’t no way this goofy motherfucker is the goat”…so I hate watched the show except that didn’t last long cus I realized bro was a genius and I became hooked
Shortly after, the rehearsal came out and the rest is history, bro took my Stan card and never gave it back smh

we not saying he trying to f\*\*\* her though
A little thing I find hilarious is that they had Christopher Abbott ham-up Billy’s coldness so much lmao. Like Billy is an a\*\*\*\*\*\* but Abbotts portrayal is like comedically cold.
Movie so good you got Los pollos giving it a 5 star on Letterboxd and saying movie of the year
he loved Digger so we respect bro
he loved Digger so we respect bro
Dude is such a dunce then all sudden becomes Robert ebert when he watches a movie
so sexual tension just from her? idk what you’re saying
brother there were multiple parts in the 3 hours where his admiration of her crossed a coworker or spend 30 days with someone. where he was protecting her. Yes partially because he saw himself in her but also because anyone you spend 30 days with before they go to prison. Where you dont view them as evil. Is different from the standard friendship. There is a difference between being friends with someone and living with them. then as someone who has had a friend who went to jail for a little that feeling of not only being a way from them but the state keeping them away from their family, kids, people they care about. We arent saying he is in love. We arent saying he is trying to f\*\*\*.
