The problem is some of the people saying this are the same ones who cry when rappers try to have depth or do something artistic

You guys are the reason some of these rappers wanna call themselves something more

"Just shut up and rap" vibes from some of u clowns posting in this thread

Exactly. Should be easy to see from this thread exactly why there are rappers looking to break away from being labelled as rappers. And it's not because of their own views on rap being art

    PEACEFUL HARMONY

U notice how them niggas who be calling theyself artists be saying it all the time bro trying to force a narrative or brainwash u into thinking that s***? I haven’t heard a nigga like Ross or Andre or Peggy call theyself artist unless they talking about recording artists. Niggas like travis and ye really think they a weird painter or something s*** funny and weird lol but folks eat it up so maybe they onto something

Like bro they really want suburban white acceptance that s*** so cring e to me bro

Honestly kanye fits the bill of an artist. The scope of his endeavors and the way he has talked about his practice and creative aspirations over the course of his career makes sense.

Musicians are artists. So are dancers. Etc. Art isn’t just visual arts.

    S*** take.

Colloquially yes people would call themselves a musician before saying artist instead of rapper. Some opt for musician or artist because some like to use rapper as a pejorative term and they don’t want people to label them that.

Kind of like willow smith. Because she black, ppl don’t automatically see her as indie pop.

"Just shut up and dribble" is what racists scream at their TV or send to athletes on online.

This is a rap forum where we talk about the art and the culture surrounding the art. We are not bloggers. We are not influencers.

I think it's corny to come up on rap then patronize it. The proper sports metaphor is Michael Jordan playing baseball for a lot of these guys.

Rick Ross literally only talks over beats that’s it so he’s like the textbook definition of a rapper, but if doesn’t like the label he could call himself whatever to me it doesn’t matter

Rick Ross picks his beats, writes his lyrics, lays his vocals, I'm assuming helps exec produce his projects since he's pretty hands on with that stuff. these are all parts to the sum that equal the creation of his art. Hence making him an artist. A recording artist who makes rap music.

Also if the things that I mentioned sound silly to anyone, think of it as an artist who makes collages, and music as a collage of sound. It's all art.

those lyrics he comes up with....that's art as well
hence why rap is an artform
so being a rapper is like saying "Im an artist that raps"
problem is some rappers are insecure about rap as an artform so they push the "im an artist that does more than JuSt RaP" angle

    yes, some

the thing about it is most people wouldn't be bold enough to come straight out and say that so what we have instead is a bunch of outsiders putting words in the rappers/artists mouths.

    good post tho

Idk how you could possibly think "rapper" is a worse label now than it was at any time prior. "Rapper" has become mainstream, milquetoast if anything. Hence why they have to call themselves rockstars or whatever

To me it has all types of negative stigmas, rappers view the term as someone being a poser, putting on show & on the other end it’s used to blanket a good amount of black artists & not in positive way

Country music has a similar issue. Country fans have an idea of how country music should sound and anyone who wants to go outside of that has to be called something else.

You minimized rap to just "talking over beats". I'm so confused rn
