Kind of like willow smith. Because she black, ppl don’t automatically see her as indie pop.
Exactly like it’s an underlying thing & rappers themselves don’t like the label
what do people see willow smith as???
An R&B artist like all other black women
we need to be talking about rappers who be like “i’m not a rapper im a street nigga” that s*** is so corny like bro you rap for a living
yes, some
the thing about it is most people wouldn't be bold enough to come straight out and say that so what we have instead is a bunch of outsiders putting words in the rappers/artists mouths.
good post tho
Yea I mean so many annoying posts on here are arguments over semantics without the terms ever defined but people have hate boners and attitudes over musicians and recording artists (a lot of whom do things outside of music/sound) calling themselves artist.
Some of Y’all so entitled sometimes wanting people to put constraints on how they describe themselves when they are right.
I also think sometimes we end up putting more thought into dumb takes than the person who makes the thread and then it’s like 20 pages devolving into other s***
But we know that, they shouldn’t have to say it…..
they shouldn't have to, you're absolutely right. they shouldn't.
To me it has all types of negative stigmas, rappers view the term as someone being a poser, putting on show & on the other end it’s used to blanket a good amount of black artists & not in positive way
“Being a poser, putting on a show”
I’m gonna need receipts
An R&B artist like all other black women
honestly where are u getting this from ?
are they putting her in those categories? Ive only seen her mentioned in that indie box on here, I don't follow her nowhere else so I have no idea tbh
I wouldn't put it past the industry to do her like that tho
An R&B artist like all other black women
Never understood that
Willow not making true R&B like SZA or FKA Twigs, they need to stop putting her in the convo
I see both sides. They're literally artists so they can called themselves one if they want and there's a lot of stigma to being called a rapper but then at times it feels like tryna distance oneself from rap

Well because the topic actually formed into something to put thought into after we got past the bait. That's usually how things go if the right people are in the thread, otherwise this would've been derailed to hell by now lol. I liked the discussion it ended up being, this is what I come to places like this online for not corny ass jokes and memes
An R&B artist like all other black women
is there an example of this? crazy if true

It’s not the industry, it’s from comments I’ve seen on tiktok. One guy said “I’m from the hood but I have white friends” and the video had him dancing to Willow. All the comments were like “but she’s black too?”
Never understood that

Twigs “true” R&B?
you really putting peggy and ross on the same level as ye? gtfo, kanye is the most artistic musician since prince and mj
is there an example of this? crazy if true
Just from internet comments from casuals
U notice how them niggas who be calling theyself artists be saying it all the time bro trying to force a narrative or brainwash u into thinking that s***? I haven’t heard a nigga like Ross or Andre or Peggy call theyself artist unless they talking about recording artists. Niggas like travis and ye really think they a weird painter or something s*** funny and weird lol but folks eat it up so maybe they onto something
Like bro they really want suburban white acceptance that s*** so cring e to me bro
Art is art. No matter how terrible it is
you really putting peggy and ross on the same level as ye? gtfo, kanye is the most artistic musician since prince and mj
He’s ahead of them tbh. They don’t have a classic shoe that they designed
You minimized rap to just "talking over beats". I'm so confused rn
I’m not minimizing s*** his function..what you hear of him on a song is him talking over a beat, I’m not dismissing what it means to be a good rapper picking beats being a wordsmith etc ☠️ this shouldn’t something to debate
you really putting peggy and ross on the same level as ye? gtfo, kanye is the most artistic musician since prince and mj
Just want to say these are all bait clues
Rappers ARE artists though
To say otherwise, would be to diminish the musical skills necessary to be a good rapper.

Word word. Like I just feel like some of this gets recycled over and over or people don’t put too much thought into what they’re saying but don’t elaborate and disagree with anything to the contrary. We have threads over and over about veracity in lyricism and “image of the artist”. I think framing thoughts as questions tho and not declarative angsty statements goes a long way. But idk. I feel u tho
*edit:my y’all wasn’t directed toward u it was some of the other people in here
