Lmao I’m gonna be shocked if this game is good
no shot this is the game that takes down cyberpunk 2077 and elden ring
What do you think of the game and situation since you are one of 5 people that actually likes to talk about games in the gaming section and one of the 3 that actually know what theyre talking about @Aquilla
Idk if its your type of thing in this kind of genre but I find it really interesting & surprised there hasnt been a bigger push earlier on main consoles - game doesnt look good imo buts its success is undeniable
Outside of the ones from the literal time of Pokemons inception most of the other attempts were on 3ds, especially in the last 10 years
And its probably going down as one of the most successful games ever - def at least on steam which i didnt see coming AND theyre a Indie/Double A studio
Always been a missed niche that Gamefreak has been lazily coasting on for multiple years now its wild

Most of their competitors flopped because they didn't have the design chops for the monsters. I like the game -- it's fun and plays nothing like Pokemon (like you said, it's more BotW and Ark than Pokemon), but the fact that they jacked Pokemon designs can't be ignored. I don't give a f*** personally, but if Pals didn't look like they do the game wouldn't be as successful (imo). And those designs, quite frankly, are kitbashed versions of Pokemon. Which again, idc about that it just is what it is. I'm shocked it took this long to happen in this form. Fan games have been kitbashing Pokemon for decades lol
Ohh just saw when looking the dudes up that theyre the ones that made that game called Craftopia
I thot Pal might have been their first serious game but they also made that which was like a BOTW ripoff mixed with Minecraft iirc
S*** was mid from what I heard n reading but was ok & not offensive
S*** is morbidly fascinating, im still surprised its even a real game outside of it being originally a s***post basically
It's not AI. Plagiarism, sure, but the video game industry has a LOOOOOONG history of overt plagiarism -- even in major classics like DOOM.
Gameplay wise the game is nothing like Pokemon. Art design wise certainly.
the ceo talking about ai
doesn't confirm a thing but it'll never be confirmed in any scenario for fear of ridicule imo

The game showcased most of these designs in the 2021 reveal trailer, before AI showed up. They'd been working on the game even longer before then.
If you're gonna take the CEO's word for it then why not peep the interview where he mentions that he hired a graduate student to draw the monsters?
There's no proof of AI use. You don't need AI to plagiarize Pokemon. Fans have been doing it effectively for decades.

saw that too. artists can use ai to help with designs, doesn't mean it's fully ai gen. in other words, im just hating

however this I agree with and is of concern

I don't see the concern. Plagiarism/ripping s*** off has been at the core of the video game industry since its inception and still happens today. DOOM, Zelda plagiarizing songs for its soundtrack, etc. How is this any different from s*** like Scary Movie or commissioned fan art or doujinshi? It's all the same. It's fine.
if someone is that enthusiastic about ai, they're definitely using it
IMO
I hate to tell you this, but every major developer is integrating AI into their workflow. Maybe not for art, but for programming definitely. Are you going to suspect that every single Square Enix game is using AI assets because the CEO mentioned it? This is just where development is.

yeah but it's just too lazy for me to get immersed without thinking, "hey this looks exactly like pokemon". the lion king is plagiarized but you never think of the og so the immersion is there. it's too plagiarized, blatantly at that. a lot of people dont care and a lot of people do. I do, bc it's concerningly lazy

square enix is a bigger studio so probably not. and I'll tell you what lol I have no problem with ai in fact I like it too as long it's used correctly and the result is just as good if not better. ends have to justify the means

Yea I can understand what you mean. It personally doesn't bother me but I can understand why it can bother other people. How do you feel about fanart?

Bigger studios are the first to jump on something like AI, ha. They cut costs anywhere they can.

It's more people that would need to integrate it then, on top of their regular schedule + workflow. That's true though and if they are, they've likely begun long ago

Fanart in general?
Fanart in general?
Commissioned fanart and fanart in general. Morality wise, I mean.

fanart is a beautiful thing and so is commissioned fanart. there are people with patreons dedicated to smash bros mods lol it's cool bc it's people adding to the ips they're a fan of and indulging further into what they love while developing skills.

How is plagiarizing other people's art and selling it any different than what Palworld is doing? Would it be better if the Pokemon designs were 1:1 and just called their names instead?
only way i can see someone being against it would be from a legal/financial side and something as innocent as fanart, even fan games, doesn't warrant that from large or small companies imo @Everything

cmon man dont do that. there's a difference. if i draw pikachu riding a bike, it's pikachu riding a bike. selling it for $50 is nothing. if i make a game with fakachu (who looks like pikachu's first cousin), fakasaur + 98 other pokemon's cousins all riding bikes and i sell copies of it for $50mil, i'd expect some legal troubles nearby bc that's more like robbery.
fanart is selling more of the ip. palworld is jacking and selling as their own

They not selling copies of it for $50mil. They're selling it for $30 lol. What if 10 million people bought your Pikachu riding a bike for $50? Does that make it not OK? Fanart is absolutely NOT selling more of the IP. You can buy official art of Pokemon. Fanart is actively taking money from Pokemon. There is no difference.
Again, would it be better if they just called it Pokemon and filled it with 1:1 Pokemon? That would be selling more of the IP, right?
Fair Use law exists for a reason. That's why Scary Movie, Epic Movie, and other s*** doesn't get sued to oblivion. That's why Joseph Joestar can look identical to the nigga from Fist of the North Star and not get sued. That's why South Park can do what they do and not get sued. As long as you don't steal assets (not remake assets, literally use the same assets that they used in their games), call it the same name, or pretend to be it... you're pretty much good lol.
