It's a stupid term, call me black

That’s exactly what I say. I’m not a person of color. I’m African and I support other Africans.

Only a bunch of liberals would actually call themselves that too tbh.

I'm Black. I'll take Black American too. My "color" should be specified. You can't "all lives matter" peoples experiences like that.

This is a bad take but I'll bite anyway.

Comparing and contrasting struggle like this is very surface level and counterproductive.

This is also the idea that everyone struggles are the same just because they struggled which is just dishonest. I have sympathy for everyone who suffers but all suffering is not the same, and acknowledging that is perfectly fine.

This is the exact type of s*** that makes "POC" a reductive term and it leads to comments like this.

the point wasn’t to compare/contrast struggles, i wanted to list examples without comparing their “magnitude”

with that in mind, i don’t think that all suffering is equal, or that having undergone any kind of suffering places you in the same camp, but i can see how it would be read like that

the point i wanted to focus on is the subjectivity of one’s own struggle and people’s reluctance to “put down” their own experiences relative to others

i don’t wholly disagree with your/op’s sentiments on poc being pushed as a way to liken other groups’ experiences to the Black struggle for the purpose of solidarity/inclusion; even from my perspective as an asian american, it just seems dishonest/parasitic

i just know enough people in liberal/progressive circles that use the term that i’ve heard their arguments and wanted to play devil’s advocate, even if you and others disagree

It's not even just in relation to the Black struggle though.

For instance, I'm a Black American. You're Asian American. I have no idea what your experience is in the United States on a personal level. My ethnic group doesn't even know where our people came from specifically beyond the continent of Africa, while I assume you know what country/countries your parents are from.

That is actually a big deal and difference maker alone. I wouldn't lump us together in a group because we have way different perspective to start with from an ethnic/racial POV.

I just find it lazy/dishonest. Glad you explained your stance though.

    good point

can i ask what kind of background/education/influential readings you have in this area? i’m trying to really crystallize and know my thoughts on this stuff, and you seem to have your stances pretty figured out

not to suggest that my experience could be the same as yours, but maybe some kind of parallel trajectory would be cool

can dm on alpha if you don’t want to post publicly

I can't even access Alpha atm but what do you mean, like in terms of how I view racial minorities under a Western lens?

I would say some of the most impactful reading I've done in regards to worldview is Afro-Pessimism writing. Along with that just some academic works that a***yze the impacts of colonialism on specific groups of people.

    rackedanddispatched.noblogs.org/files/2017/01/Afro-Pessimism2.pdf

Some is just natural common sense to me. I feel like if people read up on History more they would share somewhat similar sentiments. I don't downplay others suffering historically & currently but oppression is more complex than that.
