I make 85k in Los Angeles and manage to save a little at the end of each month. I have fun too. The catch is that it's basically unaffordable to live by yourself in this city without sacrificing space and safety.

You are both right. $50/hr is a golden cage. Enough to be middle class. Not enough to break out of the rat race which is what people want.

  • Feb 3, 2024

It isn't if you have a family
If you can't live on 96k pre taxes alone you're clearly over reaching your tax bracket

You can find quality pockets all over the country tbh. Most young people just pile up in the same large cities.

A lotta below poverty level people that be gods at making s*** stretch really be just one standard paying full time job (lot of places only offering part time) away from being pretty satisfied.

@Choking both has a point and doesnt at the same time. It wouldnt be above the means if wages kept up with the cost of living

But People be coming to NYC WANTING to live in hell kitchen/lower Manhattan and I be confused lol. It’s not even all that great or worth the price lmao

"With the average rent in Brooklyn being $2,644, you’ll want to make about $8,813 per month or $105,756 per year. The general guideline is to pay no more than 30 percent of your monthly income on rent."

its not just manhattan. ofc living w roommates would help and ofc there's probably ways to stretch the money. living a comfortable middle class life without any sacrifices needs that 105k salary tho, at least according to this source

American mentality is exceptional in that.

Ideally it should be a cap on how much wealth one could earn. The existence of multi billionaires while ppl are starving should make the human conscience angry. The inevitable slew of replies disputing this will just prove my point

If you make over 7k and can barely save anything you must be a huge ass consumer an average apartment at the least will be 1700-2300 a month

wtf are you spending on every month
