I just realized that base pokemon games have never been that good. All of them had major issues and it took either a third version or a remake to fix all the issues. People love hg/ss but if they played the originals on gameboy they would have realized that there werent many pokemon in johto, with many johto pokemon being in kanto and almost all kanto pokemon being in kanto, which made it hell to play. Gen 1 also had huge issues with balancing, gen 3 had few water pokemon that could learn surf and fire pokemon were useless, especially in emerald. Gen 4 had like 3 fire type pokemon and was slow as hell. I could go on for days but y'all get the point.
So if pokemon x and y got a pokemon z it couldve been the best of the series but we'll never know
honestly HGSS/GSC gotta be one of the worst games
honestly HGSS/GSC gotta be one of the worst games
I played pokemon crystal after hg and man i found it a lot worse, and it wasnt because of the graphics
lost my gardevoir and gengar in my platinum nuzlocke run
rip Hayden and EasyFX
im losing too many mons due to careless acts
honestly HGSS/GSC gotta be one of the worst games
HGSS one of the worst!?!?!

Gen 2 lacks content. HGSS fixes damn near everything wrong with Gen 2 except the level curve and even then it's ok once you hit Kanto in the remake.

Gen 2 issues doesn't come from development though. Gen 2 issue is due to hardware limitations. The betas show that GF had big plans for Gen 2 but just went bare bones because the Gameboy Color couldn't handle it. They pushed that cart to the maximum. Honestly I over look Gen 2 issues because it has nostalgia. The music is fire and the memories of playing it all day and night is forever some of my best childhood memories. The same with Gen 1. I s*** on Gen 1, but I love those games to death. You don't pay flaws attention as a kid.

Didnt iwata add kanto after the game was done because he wanted to? And still, the gbc 2nd gen games issues arent caused by hardware limitations, at least balancing issues and limited pokemon i dont think are related to hardware
HGSS one of the worst!?!?!
they never fixed the level curve so yeah
im very nostalgic for Johto and at one point it was my fav region. will always love the games, but I don't think they're good.

They did fix the level curve...... Post Elite 4. HGSS is probably the series finest moment along with BW2. It's no way anyone can call HGSS the worst all because of level curve.

No he added it after Masuda and Ishihara approached him. HAL lab worked in the same building as GF at the time and he was always around. The game was already pushing the cart to it's limit and they couldn't figure out how to shrink Kanto down to put it on the cart. Nah balancing and limited Pokemon came after they had difficulty implementing what they wanted and forced ideas from upper management. Gen 2's development was hell. Mostly due to technical limitations, TPCi involvement, and Nintendo. They dropped skateboarding because they couldn't figure out how to properly get it to work on the GB. There was a lot more Pokemon that was cut due to balance issues and not being able to get certain evolutions to work and the introduction of Steel and Dark types. Like Umbreon was originally poison type and evolved using a poison stone. Leafeon was also in the game. Even in the beta of the games skateboarding is still broking. Fans had to fix it. Balancing was a lot better during the original concept of Gen 2.
I can't recommend it enough.... Look into Gen 2's development and beta leaks. Gen 2 has probably the most interesting development history of any generation. All the dropped ideas, story elements, cut Pokemon, cut characters, and reworked pokemon are all extremely interesting. Hell Lugia wasn't even meant to be in Gen 2, but was shoehorned in. Like Gen 2 was a mess, Lugia even during it's forced creation was meant to be female, but Nintendo ignored it's Creator and gave it a male voice actor in the movie.
HGSS fixes a lot of the limited Johto Pokemon with more Pokemon in headbutt trees, swarms, and the upgraded Safari Zone.

Thanks for the clarification, i misremembered it
And i still dont think hardware limitations were the reason: a lot of johto pokemon are locked in kanto, and this was just stupid level design, ghost types still were dog s***, with the new dark type suffering from the same problems, and this is a game design issue, hardware had nothing to do with it. Power scaling is garbage in gen 2 gbc version and forces you to grind a lot. These are not issues caused by the gameboy but by the designers working on the game. To me hg/ss are the only way to fully enjoy gen 2, where basically all the issues i have with the gbc games are absent
Ive decided to replay pokemon x, but idk if i should do a nuzlocke or play it normally but only using gen 6 pokemon and no exp share/grinding

Nah, what I mean is hardware limitations caused them to go back on what they were trying to do. Because of the hellish development they probably forgot to fix Johto Pokemon appearing in the Johto region. It was sort of fixed in Crystal, but GS you can definitely see what they were going for, but obviously the rapidly changing development they didn't fix certain things. Ghost types are pretty broken in Gen 2 lol idk where you get that from. Especially since hypnosis is broken in Gen 2 and curse dealing double damage over time vs the set damage it does now lol. It's why in fan games Misdrevous is a b**** to take out. Shadow Ball, Spite, Nightshade buffed, dreameater. Ghost weren't a joke. Ghastly, Haunter, and Gengar got stat buffs too. Dark typing was an after thought and many of these pokemon didn't have the dark typing until close to the final build where most didn't even have a final design, and in the case of T-Tar, larvitar wasn't nothing but a blob with eyes. Hardware limitations caused them to cut quite a few Pokemon that probably would have been dark type.
The only issue I have with Gen 2 is the level curve, but even then it's not so bad since Lance highest Pokemon is a level 60 Dragonite that can be taken out easily. The rest of the elite 4 is push overs.
Usually I'm pretty harsh on GF when it come to this stuff, but GSC development cycle was nothing but complete hell and probably the only time they were under legit crunch. Gen 2 has so much cut content because of hardware limitations and time limits. It probably has the most cut content of any Pokemon game. This is why I always tell people to read up on Gen 2. It's the most interesting development cycle of any Pokemon game.
Honestly in all my playthroughs of Gen 2 I never had to grind. I never really had this issue. I think people over blow this one. My Pokemon are usually all around level 40-45 by the time I hit the E4. The AI is a joke in the games. I only ever had to grind in the fan made polished crystal.

Development hell or not, what we got were some average games that got fixed 10 years later. What i meant by ghost types is that for 99% of the game you only go against ghastly, haunter and gengar and their few ghost type moves are all physical. Same with dark type pokemon but instead of being physical the moves are special, so having these pokemon on your team doesnt help you that much unless you just like them. If you wanted to beat lance you had to have an ampharos or grind or it would've been quite hard, i remember beating him thanks to ampharos cause while feraligatr can beat charizard and aerodactyl dragonites can be tougher. Ice pokemon were a no go cause there were only 2 ice pokemon that could learn ice moves and even then they were quite weak and weak against charizard and aerodactyl.
Idk man i think all the issues come from the fact there wasnt that much choice, a lot of the best johto pokemon were locked in kanto, with some only available after getting 16 badges. And this issue caused a lot more and im happy that hg/ss fixed it cause johto had become a good region to explore
Like to beat the gbc games a lot of people probably had at least typhlosion, shiny gyardaos and ampharos, with the rest being filler. A lot of johto pokemon are pretty weak

You're assuming though. Many people use to get Shiny Gyarados because it looked cool as a kid. I typically used Typhlosion, Crobat, Electabuzz/Lantern, Dragonair, Ursaring, and Lapras or Graveler/Golem/Steelix. Some times on Crystal I'll look for a phanpy early on to use. Like as an adult that played the game you know how to set a team up.
I completely disagree with that most of the Johto Pokemon are weak. Lantern? Ampharos? Ursaring? Skarmory? Donphan? Crobat? Togetic? Quagsire? Fortress? Heracross? Granbull? Hitmontop? Girafarig is a good Psychic alternative to Abra and the other psychic types during johto. Piloswine? These are all good Pokemon you can get before Kanto. Only Houndour, Murkrow, Larvitar, Natu, and Slugma are in Kanto.
Like Gen 2 probably the easiest games to beat. Skarmory with Steel wing being busted walls the entire E4 except houndoom.

Lantern is only good because of the typing, they aint all that stat wise. Togetic, quagmire, granbull are also me and forretress is good in competitive. Hitmontop is one of the most difficult pokemon to obtain. Piloswine i guess its good but not as good as other alternative ice/ground types. They're all good i guess but aside from typhlosion/feraligatr, ampharos and shiny gyarados there arent that many great options. I did not bring up trade evos cause playing the games now its quite hard to get them
All im saying is gen 2 is so much better on Nintendo ds, playing g/s/c is useless now since they're worse in every way

got 6 badges now
once I get to the snow city ima get a glaceon maybe
but I think flareon is more optimal now

I agree with you. Only reason to go back is for that nostalgic feeling.
