Okay I can respect that take on the production can be “problematic” (I’m not crazy about that word either honestly cus it gets used very cheaply and loosely by twitter)

It’s also overused on YouTube too. There’s all these junk 3 hour video essays now called s*** like “American Pie: The Most Problematic Franchise”.

Topics like these makes me wonder how can you touch on “problematic” subjects without being looked at as problematic…

I mean you don’t wanna flat out say “hey this is bad” in your film because then it’ll come across as being too preachy.

It’s like people doesn’t want films to be too safe, yet they also don’t want them to be problematic but then they also don’t want them to be preachy if you touch on more controversial subject matters.

I guess really it comes down to knowing your preferred audience and knowing you can’t please everybody

Many of my favorite films don’t explicitly speak through their text from the artist as to how to feel. They just honestly lay out something and allow you to naturally come away with whatever. There’s plenty of great stuff now but most comes across as bland, safe, and hegemonic in execution. The films that break this mold often get reduced to a political object and there’s a tiresome discourse cycle around them.

Word word. I do wanna restate that I wasn’t trying to make you out to be a pedo defender ok?

I think I’ve matured enough on here to have disagreements without taking those kinds of low digs.

Yes. Me and Elric is good. That’s why it’s a cheap dig for him to mention it twice rn.

This man is one my oldest and closest friends on the internet but talking to me about this subject has made him threaten to leave ktt countless times

It was the combination of you and Elric using examples involving pedophilia that bothered me. It felt deliberate. Sorry for getting aggressive in response.

You good. Definitely wasn’t deliberate, it was the only example that came to mind that I view as problematic that’s why I brought up Romeo and Juliet.

Exactly what I thought lmao “wouldn’t Elric be the last person to try and do that?” But I didn’t wanna speak for you

Also I think that conversation is more complicated than it seems. It depends on the time, culture and context. Nudity isn’t inherently sexual and certain places evaluate these things differently. Romeo and Juliet is questionable for sure (despite the age of consent in their home country being “appropriate” for that), but I think a real “problematic” example would be anything with Demi Moore—specifically the film Pretty Baby. The film I previously mentioned as an example in another reply does have underage nudity but it’s an early 70’s Czech art film and it’s brief and certainly not meant to be sexualized. Another example like this is Lady Snowblood.

It’s really f***ed up. Her mother essentially exploited her. She was even in Playboy as a child, it’s insane.

bro I watched this with my mom..

Same. I didn't know much going in, but had long delayed watching this movie because of confusion over the runtimes. There is a domestic version (this is the one most will see) that is 110 min and then the international version which is 135 min. I intentionally downloaded the extended version

Let's just say....It was a good decision to cut some of that out lol.... wasn't nearly as awkward of a watch as i thought it'd be once we hit those parts tho.
