Overall deals and first look deals are contracts with a studio. In these deals, a writer would sign with a studio and they studio gets dibs on whatever they come up with.
In an overall deal, if the idea isn’t developed, it’s still studio property. In first look deals, the creator can take a declined idea to other studios. The benefit of both is that they’re contracts with the studio that come with a price tag, so it’s not freelance work, it’s more like employment.
Terminating deals is basically firing the writers from steady jobs even after the strike ends

How can A24 afford this s*** but Universal, WB, Disney, and Sony can't?

1. They can but stockholders don't view any kind of loss as good even if it's helping workers.
2. Studios tryna become streaming services has made it so they're losing mad money tryna keep with Netflix,Apple and Amazon so they have to keep the purse strings tight again due to stockholders.
If Netflix or Amazon or Apple break the line like A24 and sign then Disney and them are f***ed

From the sounds of it Netflix is the ones who are the most stingy out of the bunch to negotiate lmao
I think Bob Odenkirk said something similar
