Can you expand on the “identity crisis” thing you were mentioning in OP if you haven’t already?
@safe Buzzcut Season is definitely my favourite track, makes me want to reminisce about my younger years.
The songwriting is quite cryptic yet nostalgic. It seems to be about girls saying goodbye to their boyfriends who've been enlisted in the military.
The obvious nod being getting a buzzcut which is the induction cut. Then you have lyrics like:
"Explosions on TV, and all the girls with heads inside a dream
So now we live beside the pool, where everything is good"
The girls get to stay home while their partners are fighting.
The men up on the news, they try to tell us all that we will lose
But it's so easy in this blue, where everything is good
Using journalism to convey the fears amongst a society
It seems like the entire second verse switches from the perspective of the boyfriend who's at war.
And I'll never go home again (place the call, feel it start)
Favorite friend (and nothing's wrong when nothing's true)
I live in a hologram with you
Their relationship is now suppressed to being lived out in their minds and dreams..
Just a thought, such a lovely track with beautiful writing and crisp production
Love this album, but going back Royals aged kinda...
I give her a lot of leeway for the time and circumstances like that, but if someone dropped this song in current year with those lyrics...

which parts specifically? the lyrics are super cheesy but theyre still v endearing I think

@safe
definitely
wasn't as much of an issue back then but I think post streaming we're seeing a real issue with pop stars having a clear cut vision and identity and as a result things break off into 'eras' or even just singles until they find a sound that works
someone like Dua Lipa is an example. she definitely found her sound and identity with Future Nostalgia but her debut didnt really have any identity to it
Harry Styles has a clear identity and vision with the pop take on classic rock but two albums in and he still hasn't quite figured out the music he really wants to make and succeed at
Bieber has no idea what music he wants to make neither does Shawn Mendes etc
it feels like most popstars nowadays come out and try about 6 different styles before deciding what seems most marketable
Lorde however came out with an incredibly clear identity and style already defined and it happened to also be marketable. it didnt feel like she was testing the waters trying to figure out what sound to commit to, it was just authentic and the success came with that
which parts specifically? the lyrics are super cheesy but theyre still v endearing I think
debatably racist

thats an interesting take and makes a lot of sense too
I love how a song can have beautiful lyrics and have so many different possible meanings attached
Lorde doing this at 16/17 let’s me know I’m doing the right thing and I could do it too. Not many young people could craft a project like this
