bullshit
most albums are "big" because of singles with millions of streams
and they also force those songs into every f***ing playlist
I'm talking about old songs. The ones not aren't on playlists.
You can literally see how many streams GKMC got this year. And that will tell you if it has replay value.
Well isn’t the argument of a classic a general consensus? Why would that not be the same of the criteria for a classic? Nothing in art will be universally accepted as fact, so if you’re telling me the general consensus of an album is it lacks replay value, then that’s what it’s deemed as. I see what you’re trying to say though
If I dropped in 2014 and it's still streaming well in 2020. It has replay value. It's that simple.
I thought we were talking about replay value as it pertains to classics itt?
I never meant to imply that replay value was not a factor. My thoughts on the matter is that it too often used to judge an albums worth by those who disregard it. Albums like TPAB are designed to make you fall back.
Honestly I get your point and wasn’t trying to come in s***ting on your opinion. Just shedding my perspective on it. I don’t think TPAB lacks replay value anyways even though I know you used it as an example
That's a load of bollocks. I see this type of reasoning all the time from people who try to label albums as classics when they definitely aren't.
"Oh so and so is a classic"
"But it's not even in your top 50 most played albums"
"That doesn't mean it's not a classic, I just have to be in a certain mood to crank it"
If an album has specific prerequisites in order to enjoy it then I don't see how it can be regarded as a universal classic. A classic album is one that doesn't go out of style, not one that comes and goes depending on your mood.
I agree. With music, replay-value gets enshrined so much in a manner that you don’t see with the other arts like literature and film. Even just a single strongly-affective listen should count for something
Replay value is overrated when it comes to "classics"
It's all about whether the emotion they evoke in the listener after time passes from its initial release is still as strong
It does matter to a notable extent tbh.
Y'all will cape on something being a classic so hard but haven't even listened to it more than twice yourself
Do people watch classic films all the time?
Absolutely. Obviously you aren't re watching movies at the same rate as you would re listen to an album but film also has to withstand the test of time in order to be considered a classic.

That’s dumb
That’s dumb
How is it dumb?
If you only "in the mood" to listen to an album 3 times in 5 years then how is it a classic?

Ok 3 times in 5 years is a lil outrageous but there’s albums that I only really revisit a couple of times a year that are personal classics to me
Well numbers are the most objective tangible evidence we have in regards to an album but a lot of the times that gets pushed to the back burner for other criteria that you named. Not saying numbers are everything or really should even matter (that much) in the grand scheme of things. At the end of the day a classic is deemed so by a general consensus and your subjective personal opinion 🤷🏽♂️
