I love this album in private and in public so I mean
The album's name sake also happens to be one of my favorite Cole songs. It didn't blow me out of the water, but it's a perfectly good album.
s*** thread
Think I'm the only person itw that disagrees with this opinion and to me Sideline Story is by far the best Cole album lol
You just called Work out s***ty but said Who Dat was fire
Who Dat literally how I found Cole. Dat boy was spazzing.
Industry was a lot different back then. You can look at this and TML and see how labels tried to manufacture these albums. Tried to manage rappers like pop stars and it failed spectucularly
A lot of these rappers rush to try to make their Graduation that they make a s***ty debut
Sidelines was great.
The story goes he walked in with a more traditional J Cole album and Hov was like “nah this won’t sell”, and he was right. People were not looking to Cole for the deep cuts his first album out. Everyone wanted to see what kind of hits he could churn out.
He blew up off of No Role Modelz but niggas was bumping Sideline Story and Born Sinner long before that
He blew up off what?!
TL;DR
FNL his real debut anyway and Sideline has some great tracks on it
D&D 3 (great track besides notoriously hilarious line)
Never Told (Dion drops another gem of a beat and Cole drops one of his best flows. Amazing storytelling)
Lights Please (remastered. He always wanted it on his debut because its what made Hov sign him)
Lost Ones
Rise & Shine
Can't Get Enough
Who Dat
Title track
In The Morning (forced by label because of Drizzy stim)
Breakdown (one of his best songs storytelling off the charts, sample is gorgeous and his best beat to date)
All in all the OG FNL with the best tracks from SS included wouldve been a classic and better than F&L
Label tho
Wet Dreamz was suppoaed to be on their as well
And Premeditated Murder was meant to be on his 2nd album
Makes sense lol
The song Cheer Up which the unfineshed version leaked was supoosed to be the outro as well
Makes sense after listening to something like Breakdown
Had some misses but also some great tracks
Wasn't cohesive at all though
F*** the label man
He still wouldve done 217k
Work Out didnt blow up til afterwards
