yeah I maybe should still add something about that in the intro actually lol.. he has such a rich understanding of the mechanics of culture and is just a really interesting cultural thinker as much as artist.

I def see him a bit like a young Arthur Jafa in that, practice and theory really go hand in hand. He is still super young tho. (Can't recommend enough to check out some talks w Jafa on youtube)

b: Warp has the background in electronic, dance music. And I know your initial inspiration to get into music was to be an EDM DJ. You recently even made this trance tune for a DJ set by Ben Broome.

SM1: laughs Yeah, that was jokes, though.

b: Do you have plans to explore dance music more in the future, as a producer or DJ.

SM1: I mean, when I do DJ, people think I'm gonna play some experimental-ass noise set. Nah, I'm ‘bout to play dance music, 180 to 120 BPM. laughs

But I don't know, I don't really think about it so much in that way. I don't even think about Warp as a genre-focused label, which is why I wanted to work with them in the first place. But I don't know... it's too soon to say what will happen.

I’ll def try to check jafa out. That’s what always drew me to slausons work, the instinctual beauty of the music and its meaning through theory. Anytime I’ve ever seen him called “pretentious” it always comes from people who don’t bother to take a closer look

Jafa also made a rly good short film trying to tackle the topic of whiteness from a Black perspective called "The White Album" (a reference to him always making photo albums of topics, which is most def one of Slauson's main inspirations for Crater Speak - as well as to Beatles ofc).
