Okay side note I kinda miss Instagram and Snapchat from like 2015-16, was more simple and not as overwhelming

Sorry I'm just reminiscing about those times

we used to be lit on IG!

just saying, the same thing y'all complain about when it comes to social media happens here as well, the circlejerk of negativity, the want for validation (as a result of the like system), it all occurs on here

    People get banned here tho

I second this, especially with the negativity.

Hot take: Okay the advantage regular social media (except Twitter) has over KTT and Reddit are the general lack of negativity. I've been noticing that to me, forums are actually more stressful tbh

    You just need to remember:

    1. The product is free, so YOU are the product, specifically your data, your location, your phone data (no, it's not just TikTok stealing your stuff)

    2. In order to make as much money off of you as possible, you have to use it as much as possible (likes, followers giving you a dopamine rush) and have a fear of missing out. The entire ecosystem is designed to make you addicted, anxious, depressed.

    3. Every picture of a beautiful person you see is edited and filtered.

    4. Timelines are highlight reels and do not represent reality

    5. Vast majority of social media accounts are bots, either by states or companies (yes, especially the USA - it's not just Russia). In fact, the biggest state actor on the Internet is the USA, and the biggest social media sites we use are all based in the US and co-operate with US authorities to manipulate, monitor and deceive.

Not really. Depends on how you use social media. If you use it like the average person then yea you might feel like that. But social media never was the issue it’s just how you’re using it

I took Twitter off my home screen. I’m lowkey addicted

Yeah but the way people are starting to become aware of the effects of social media and all the stuff about it being harmful coming out may cause people to make a change

Or it might just continue to elevate and become like that black mirror episode

They don't really care, especially the ones who constantly use them to communicate or receive validation or whatever. I'll agree its not as rampant as few years back but there are still more than enough people to keep them afloat

Hopefully we won't elevate to the level of that black mirror episode, Ill be damned if we do

Why don't we have a popular social media app that encourages positivity and acceptance? If an app like that gets popular, it can really save millions of lives.

The way I look at it, social media isn't for making friendships it's for keeping in touch with the ones you already have. I have literally never made a friend through IG but I've kept in contact with people I haven't seen in months/years through it.

@op you should try blocking social media on your phone. Just go one day without going on the apps and take it from there. I did it a few months ago and it was the most at peace I’ve felt in years.

I need it to build any kind of career though. I live in place where any opprutunties would result in me being a big fish in a small pond.

It's a lot of gamification too, the need to comment and like pictures I give a piss or f*** about just so mine have a small chance of being seen. They don't give jobs to anyone, you need "clout"
