Starts off talking about how media influences how we think going all the way back to when the printing press was invented and even earlier how maps and compasses changed the way we think.

Nah, this place is definitely not as toxic as Twitter ( that s*** is on an entirely different level ) but most people that hate on social media also feel like they don’t belong on there, there’s definitely some bias against social media sites but we can all agree that they’re toxic.

Forums and image boards on the other hand, are worse when it comes to stuff like racism and bad s*** in general, like if you go to 4chan rn you’ll hear some pretty racist s*** because that’s basically the norm there, it’s part of that sites culture. That stuff would never fly on social media apps. One thing that’s important to remember is that all forums have their own culture, while social media apps all basically share the same culture

Because they want to be apart of a symbolic exchange and signal their social value.

People who post personal pictures are trying to reach a kind of social recognition: “look I exist, look I’m doing this too, look I’m enjoying this”… And this, of course, is related to the growing atomization of modern societies. In a small community where people know each other and form bonds, the need to signal your existence isn’t as strong. You signal your individuality by interacting with people who are directly in front of you. These people are your family, your friends, your neighbors and you grew up with them.

In our current age, people grow up in a city, move to another, are lost in expanding urban areas, go through several jobs etc. You can hardly build meaningful relationships. It’s not impossible but it’s hard. So what can you do to signal your existence? You reify yourself. You hide yourself behind superficial representations shaped by filters, exaggerated facial expressions, a need to perform because you’re filming your own spectacle etc. You disappear behind the window shop that you’ve built for yourself. People don’t see you, they see their own reflections on the window in front of you and so they try to replicate what you’re doing. It’s a constant network of replicated representations.

I mean I can’t blame people. I am of them. We’re not part of the guys who are making decisions behind closed doors. We’re also influenced and controlled by a bunch of s***. Our level of awareness is maybe more advanced by we’re not free either.

“Symbolic Exchange and Death” by Jean Baudrillard. Watch some videos and read some articles about it before reading it, his style is sometimes hard to follow so you’ll need to be introduced to his ideas. He wrote this in the 70s (I think) but you can easily apply it to social media.
