People who post personal pictures are trying to reach a kind of social recognition: “look I exist, look I’m doing this too, look I’m enjoying this”… And this, of course, is related to the growing atomization of modern societies. In a small community where people know each other and form bonds, the need to signal your existence isn’t as strong. You signal your individuality by interacting with people who are directly in front of you. These people are your family, your friends, your neighbors and you grew up with them.
In our current age, people grow up in a city, move to another, are lost in expanding urban areas, go through several jobs etc. You can hardly build meaningful relationships. It’s not impossible but it’s hard. So what can you do to signal your existence? You reify yourself. You hide yourself behind superficial representations shaped by filters, exaggerated facial expressions, a need to perform because you’re filming your own spectacle etc. You disappear behind the window shop that you’ve built for yourself. People don’t see you, they see their own reflections on the window in front of you and so they try to replicate what you’re doing. It’s a constant network of replicated representations.

That sound good and all but I’m not in the business of calling social media toxic while at the same time pretend the site we’re posting on isn’t more if not just as toxic as said social media sites. It’s just mfs on here can get away with saying off the wall s*** with no real life accountability.
You’re taking it too seriously. There’s a continuum between real life and social media because people use their real names and pictures to create a codified representation of themselves. There are well defined degrees which separate real life from virtuality on a forum. Teenagers and idiots want to troll? Who gives a s***? It doesn’t have any effect on real life. It becomes only problematic when it targets people who aren’t anonymous.
