Elaborate on lauryn hill fam
Regardless of how it happened (whether you on her side or the producers sides), getting sued by your label due to credits and basically not even being allowed to perform your songs in the original format they were recorded in, is kinda holy moly guacamole crazy.
also she talked about how the commercialization in the industry in general just disillusioned her, like...dawg turned down mad movie roles that coulda made her a household name lol.
RZA was on Wu Tang Forever asking for "18 points on my next joint" back in '97.
Apparently 15-25% is around the average percentage range for signed artists wit a name.
Sheeeeesh!

S*** I remember it was 8
f*** it lol lets make this thread fun.
Now what do you say if label responds, “but we’re the ones that gave you your career tho”
Don’t get me wrong, this contract positively sucks.most label contracts suck. But also poverty sucks and playing the long game via being independent really sucks plus how am I gon tell somebody be patient and wait when (insert rapper name here cause too many die now) just got shot? (vince staples quote). Indie Summer Walker prolly still working at the pole at least on the side lets be honest.
That 115k advance sounds insultingly small but to an Atlanta ex-stripper (and to most other humans) that is a life saving amount of money.
Usually I’d take the “yall still signing deals for real?” (Jay z voice) and be like its 2026 why niggas not reading the contracts but, it’s a slick predatory game they do to at risk demographics that are super duper talented but also super duper vulnerable that any advance over 100k they signing right away. Then they get smarter over the next few years and only then realize how big they get f***ed over when essentially it’s kinda too late.
Plus lets be so honest, with the way Summer acts outside of music, without the machine behind her she prolly dont really gets the career popping like that.
The undefined terms and the vagueness of when they end in her contract are the issue here
F u talmbout
He better not respond to me in bold letters
Imma be mad af
" classified as “pre-album projects” "
Caping for =\= explaining how contract works (especially when I say in the same post that the contract sucks)
I’m just saying out of every artist that ever had a machine behind them push them out towards the mainstream I’d assume that the artist that: hate hates performing live and usually looked like she aint wanna be there performing on stage (to the point the internet made jokes about it), hates appearing in public and…usually looked like she aint wanna be there (to the point the internet made jokes about it)
I would not be surprised if the label did a LOT of heavy lifting behind Summer Walker
But I agree FUCK the labels
This is why going independent is always the best choice. The problem is they (the artists) clearly dont see it that way.
Niggas just wanna say “fuck the label” they have no idea of what that actually means played out moving forward lol
F*** the labels but we don’t have an ecosystem for artists to survive or break without one fr and sustain themselves
So many layers to that though, kinda ties into the whole “we dont need a mainstream” Shawn Cee concept
No mainstream and no labels we’ll get a cute bedroom made album every now and then but without their budget and resources for this s*** urban music isn’t made on the same level. On the flip side they gonna wanna recoup
Just like with Jay Z Target this s*** kinda go back to our own lack of post-them infrastructure

"Interscope argues that Walker’s “failure to deliver” all the recordings required under her contract leaves her liable for damages. According to the complaint, her original 2017 agreement and subsequent amendments obligated her to deliver five studio albums, with her earlier projects, Last Day of Summer and CLEAR, classified as “pre-album projects” that did not count toward that album total."
Terms are pretty clear.
CLEAR is classified as an EP and Days of Summer is classified as a mixtape.
The album wants 5 albums. She dropped 3 albums. She got 2 more to go and she out of there.
That's not really the issue with her and her team. The actual issue is that's 2 more albums that she not gonna see a lot of profit off of hence why she wants out (and I'm wit that lol. I've said this deal she signed sucks. People been talking about her contract for years)
could she theoretically settle with them or
does this mean her career is over
It means it's time for Winter Runner
How does 110K turned in to 50mil?
This is around the standard for major labels right?
legitimately yes lol.
it's maybe like....few people in the world that know how the music industry works.
And half of those people know enough to know it's not worth participating in.

We agree but you were speaking on some oh she comes from poverty she should be happy with an advance that she has to pay back anyway artist bad label good s*** and that was missing the point

Like folks can easily "get it out the mud" as an indie but summer walker barely liked going outside to even begin with cause #anxiety but now it's f*** the label mane watch aht.
and once again, I said the deal sucks. But majority of major label deals sucks (which is why the contract talk during #thatbeef never made sense to me cause dawg both of yall niggas had bad contracts) but "What's the point of talking if nobody ever learns?"
We agree but you were speaking on some oh she comes from poverty she should be happy with an advance that she has to pay back anyway artist bad label good s*** and that was missing the point
You misread my tone, I'm not saying "she SHOULD be happy with an advance." but moreso, because of her background she WOULD be happy with an advance.

THE MAN HAD SLAVE ON HIS FACE
Even if she is stupid for signing, i will never side or cape for labels!
How many of the artists you listen to fully independent CutiePieHole?
