    Pre album projects is sinister

Do you call EPs an album or not?

Probably not an EP but a mixtape absolutely. That’s her best album. Just didn’t count. Sad

    CLEAR was just 4 songs.

I never heard the other tape + im from the era where artists differentiated they mixtapes from albums

Yeah Clear is an EP leveraged to dump some songs neither party wanted

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LastDay_of_Summer(mixtape) This is the tape. Submitted carefully to meet Billboard’s criteria of an album so it could receive certifications

the s*** these labels pull whenever an artist is willing to walk away is nasty

they really had her in a f***ed up deal, only 110k advance and 16% of every earned dollar

the sad part is that's not even a bad deal compared to stuff ive seen people with names we all know get $10-15k advances with 10-15%

  • Positivenamehere

f*** it lol lets make this thread fun.

Now what do you say if label responds, “but we’re the ones that gave you your career tho”

Don’t get me wrong, this contract positively sucks.most label contracts suck. But also poverty sucks and playing the long game via being independent really sucks plus how am I gon tell somebody be patient and wait when (insert rapper name here cause too many die now) just got shot? (vince staples quote). Indie Summer Walker prolly still working at the pole at least on the side lets be honest.

That 115k advance sounds insultingly small but to an Atlanta ex-stripper (and to most other humans) that is a life saving amount of money.

Usually I’d take the “yall still signing deals for real?” (Jay z voice) and be like its 2026 why niggas not reading the contracts but, it’s a slick predatory game they do to at risk demographics that are super duper talented but also super duper vulnerable that any advance over 100k they signing right away. Then they get smarter over the next few years and only then realize how big they get f***ed over when essentially it’s kinda too late.

Plus lets be so honest, with the way Summer acts outside of music, without the machine behind her she prolly dont really gets the career popping like that.

Yeah there is unfortunately no completely right and no completely wrong answer. I will say labels are more willing to renegotiate than it looks like and if you're on good terms with your label they'll work with you but very few artists are like that

Theres surely no way they can prove 50 mil worth of damages

it's like Grailed lowballing, you list something for $200 and someone send you a $50 offer neither party thinks it's realistic

  • shoutout to tinashe for having a s***ty situation with RCA then being able to figure it out independently and have a good situation with atlantic

  • Frank really played this s*** dead perfect man crazy
