Many artist leave their sound, they just get dragged through the mud for it lol.
Left her comfort zone huh? Of making the same surface level trite indie pop sound instead this time using The National members to give it some sort of facade of a new sound or style. Literally the exact same s*** lol
white girl hops on to what other "trendy" white girls are doing right now and now she invented
while black artists have been doing that s*** since the beginning and goes unnoticed because white people keeps jacking their style. there are very clear examples of black artists reinventing themselves in the past few years but i know you didn't bother to look into it at all.

Chai tea is good
Folklore is an incredible album and it’s completely different than what anybody would expect her to release. This isn’t a random indie artist either, she’s one of the most popular artists in the USA.
On the other hand we have hip hop artists making the same, tired, copycat formulaic music making this one of the worst years ever for the genre. New guys copying other new guys, legends making bland music or going crazy and jay electronica making one of the most boring albums in years.
Hip hop needs a genre defining album, is kendrick our only hope?
To answer the title question, it's a huge risk.
I know the artist may be at the top and killing it every time they release, but to change your sound is a huge risk. The two examples I can think of off the top of my head are Usher's Here I Stand and Beyonce's 4 albums. Both went for a more mature, traditional R&B sound which their fans didn't like. They changed their sound with the next 2 albums and they were much more successful (for both artists)
But Taylor will always do well. She's originally a country act and country fans ALWAYS support their artists. There's a reason the man with SEVEN diamond albums is a country artist
Taylor album sounded like a Lana album but I liked it
one song sounded like Lana so the whole album sounds like her? Smh
