Folklore is an incredible album and it’s completely different than what anybody would expect her to release. This isn’t a random indie artist either, she’s one of the most popular artists in the USA.

On the other hand we have hip hop artists making the same, tired, copycat formulaic music making this one of the worst years ever for the genre. New guys copying other new guys, legends making bland music or going crazy and jay electronica making one of the most boring albums in years.

Hip hop needs a genre defining album, is kendrick our only hope?

This is the closest Taylor's sounded to her comfort zone all decade. The last time she sounded this much like the country singer-songwriter she originally was, was Fearless, Speak Now or her debut.

What was so out of her comfort zone? the trees on the front?

This is more like 4:44 than 808s career arc wise lol. You talk about hip hop, but there's literally more left turns on the last Drake album who's seen as one of the genre's safest stars. Hip hop is way more innovative right now than Taylor's album. Charli or FKA Twigs are pop/r&b artists taking more risks. Even Charli's been on the same direction for 4 years now tbh

    :pog: okay dis cute af

  • as someone who has followed her career since her self titled album I didn't really feel like it was anything too out of the ordinary

sure she hasn't made an ENTIRE album like this before but she has similar songs on every album. she was certainly in her element and still in her comfort zone from a musical perspective

it is great though and more artists should put emphasis on constructing an actual body of work that flows and works together

bro Lana is no where as talented as Taylor. Please stop

If Lana actually wrote the lyrics on NFR then she might be a better writer than Taylor tbh

hell no bro! Lana’s lyrics are snooze fest! Taylor Swift is an incredible f***ing writer. Drake needs to start using her as his ghost writer tbh

i was asking cos idk if she did or not lol. there are some pop artists who always write their lyrics but have producers/musicians write the music, i always felt like lana might be that type of artist cos her lyrics have a similar tone across her career

yeah she is at times, but i don't think she's been on top form since Red. As in her personally not her music/career

bro I used to think red was my favorite album by her but I recently just listened to speak now and that might be my top 10 favorite albums of all times

also an album where she was on better form as a writer than she has been on her last 4 albums. Speak Now is probably her strongest album for writing herself. Her writing has lost some of it's personality since then imo, Max Martin is a genius but he will do that to people. Relieved Lily Allen never worked with him again after one song which she's disowned since lol

folklore was good, but it was also taylor's jumping onto the new mainstream trend

outside her comfort zone (if we assume that to mean "how her other recent albums sound in comparison"), sure, but it doesn't escape the criticisms that u laid out in ur 2nd paragraph

i don't listen to her tbh but what she achieved from 2006-2013 was so impressive and showcased her talent. I don't really get the hype over the music since then tho

I get what you’re saying, it’s a “themed” album, or a concept album where she’s exploring a different aesthetic. But compare it to a phoebe bridgers, a julien baker, or even a Joni Mitchell who she’s supposed to be like. It’s still kind of generic pop.

Like Phillip Phillips with that home song, it’s folky but it’s still perfect for a real estate commercial.

  • Sep 2, 2020

More artists should do this though, even more so than she did.
