This is just a hypothesis that I believe could be the means or foundation of several singles actually going number in the future...
Polo G's snippet of the song was HUGE on tiktok, youtube and everywhere else; viral as viral can get. Therefore numbers accumulated, but no official release has happened, yet.
IF what I believe to be true, is true, then this would most definitely be a cheat code and how he "popped out" a number one single on the Billboard Hot 100.
My theories about Rapstar/Billboard hack:
(which I know every blogger, manager, a&r will see and implement this to their artists' promotional structures but whatever...)
The same way youtube recognizes songs by Content ID from copyright of the song by said artist to generate royalties & count streams, I believe TikTok has the same Content ID system as well for artists & creators to gain from their creations as well (because who tf wouldn't wanna collect that TikTok bag) ....
NOW, as the virality of Rapstar began to overflow BEFORE the actual release it had amassed tens of millions of plays on tiktok and youtube AND THEREFORE can be recognized as a true stream in totality of the release because the snippet and single aren't much of a difference
(Snippet was acapella & single had drums BUT then I guess it would still be valid as a sample and equal a stream because of the said song from the snippet was used in the actual single).
THEN counted as a stream that literally built overtime because everyone, mainly most, loved it and ran that b**** up. So when Rapstar drop and the copyrights went into play, the Content ID of the social medias HAD to count that s*** as a stream and there's literally NO TELLING how many places outside of youtube and tiktok where it was going BEYOND viral and being played as just the snippet alone. And there you have it, a unseen number one hit single on the billboard.
I say it's genius, simple, & cool. But I could most def. see billboard cracking down on this later in the future as they did with bundles.
S.O. Polo G's team frfr. Niggas found a hack untouched.
MFs basically made mfs preorder a snippet truth be told. And PG cashed out on it.
doesn’t work like that
you’re right in that the marketing strategy was to pump the f*** out of the snippet and blow it up like that through TikTok and etc
But plays of the snippet and song on TikTok don’t get registered as proper streams in terms of charts - counting plays across thousands of snippet videos and etc would be borderline impossible so Billboard just get data from official sources for their charts
This just in: OP learns snippets exist.
MIND BREAKING STUFF. THE INDUSTRY WILL NEVER BE THE SAME.

What song
BUT if not TikTok THEN WHERE??????
TikTok is basically only a marketing tool for blowing songs up
The charts come from full releases of the song - Spotify, apple, YouTube (official versions) etc
I’m sure labels are gonna do some f*** s*** and make TikTok have a more defined role in charts at some point but for now it’s just where a lot of hits get made
when @op realizes about the 30 second preview on songs that haven't come out yet on streaming sites like apple music
Worst number 1 song in a long time
lmao absolutely not there have been so many terrible #1s in the past 18 months

that's what we believe because that's what we are told famo, but I'm telling you Content ID recognition is true and real. The snippet of the song was literally the song. And like I said in the post, if not the snippet being qualified as stream AFTER the release it most def and to count toward a stream as a sample, and just like Hans Zimmer movie samples, that aren't released as a real single, only movie usage, he collects a stream and royalty from the use of it. in PG case, the song and stream is so identical you wouldn't be able to just qualify it as JUST a sample, imo. But these are just theories.

I get what you’re saying but if this was a viable option it would be being exploited way way more than it is now
We can look at the component breakdowns of the hot 100 and attribute the streaming numbers almost entirely to Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube
Everything else is too small to even warrant mentioning
Billboard are kinda scummy but they got pretty strict rules about what is valid to be counted and what Isn’t
