@op is speaking facts, my friend actually found hidden ny quite early on probs had around 5 to 10k followers and it was dope for little but man his content has taken nose dive with actual trash

i took break from really following fashion for most part in 2020 for multiple reasons but really the main reason was because i became very disillusioned with it and how materialistic its became no reason that every jordan 1 high should go 100s over retail

i am going to find new job for Christmas period and probs blow some money clothes but gonna mostly like just thrift & buy couple designer garments i been curious in getting

  • Oct 9, 2020

i things i copped this year was online cermaics hoodie, needles pants & one or two pairs of shorts

  • Oct 9, 2020

i don't understand how this isn't an inherent result of hobbies connected to the producer of the product rather than just the product itself. Like, if you'd want to talk to someone because they're wearing a specific brand instead of liking their outfit, then clearly wearing the right brand is what's important. It feels like when most people talk about fashion, they lead with the brand of clothes its from not what they look like.

Wish I could go back to like 07-08, buying shoes on nikesb.org , not paying stockx or grailed resale

I feel like a lot of this is because sneaker culture is a culture derived from a product rather than a product derived from a culture. At the end of the day the members of the culture aren't the true owners and trendsetters, Nike and the rest of the corporations are, and their driving ambition isn't the benefit of the culture but money. So they follow the business model of limited stock to generate hype which generate sales, and from there resale markets emerge. Social media making it mainstream only intensified it to the point where kids are swiping their parents credit card on 1000$ stockX listings. This is a unfortunate yet inevitable side effect from a culture as materialistic as sneaker culture, but a side effect that can't be helped.

this is a video from reggie the casual on kinda the same topic where he does touch on the commodification/gentrification of streetwear/sneaker culture

honestly OP, all of what you described is the outcome of capitalism eating things alive and making a hollow shell of what once was a culture due to popularity (trends/hype) and demand, you can say the same for music genres and even cityscapes

everything is a commodity to consume or will become one, nothing is sacred

    great vid BTW

I've been wanting to talk about this and these ideas for a hot minute. I made a video as a jumping off point so we as a community as a whole can talk about what's going on with Streetwear.

yooo -- solid vid. Really enjoyed the watch/edits. I used to work at HYPEBEAST mag for a 3+ year stretch and left for the reasons you described. The scene's gotten weird and it's touched everything that I care about as it pertains to "culture." Idk even the seeding plays speak to the pro capitalist mentality from same folks who are understood as getting it from the mud and living the authentic version of this lifestyle. I bring up seeding because I view it as the most simplest, controlled, personal way to reach your intended audience pre drop. I've been keeping tabs on Salehe's/NB's moves with their upcoming shoe. I believe John Mayer set it off, next thing I know I'm reading Footwear News article about Addison Rae pulling up with the kicks and skateboard lol. Idk it's transitioned to a weird space. I'm getting Netflix ads for this insane sneaker head show lol. A lot is wrong vs what's good, which makes me feel for those who didn't experience "the golden years." I'll cut myself here: vid resonated with me, good stuff.

i've always thought this should be more of a meta-discussion we should have in the fashion space because it affects it to his very core

honestly it's sad to see the "culture" (honestly it was never a culture because it was just consumerism in a "underground" banner, but that's another discussion) degrade this much honestly

Yeah hear you, and trust, others feel the same. Real ones express the same sentiment behind the scenes. It's simply a matter of are you willing to speak up and get "black balled" lol. The odds are overwhelmingly stacked against. I think after that it's the notion of say you introduce this type of conversation and it it picks up steam in the public arena -- it's a pretty sensitive/raw convo to have. I joke designers/creative type are the most sensitive amongst us. People will take things personally, feelings get hurt, all of a sudden (at least how I perceive it) you go viral and what started from an honest POV gets soiled with negativity. Whether it was intentional or not, it's a stain against your name.

Is that viral 15 min worth it, which becomes the first result attached to your name on google? So now xyz stops answering your calls, you can't get in at Nike/Apple/whatever fashion house/magazine. Essentially you kamikaze your future. Or do you play the game to a certain extent and hopefully make a difference once you've done enough and have the appropriate level of "clout" backing, which would essentially cover you from the default "ahh he's a hater" type energy by posting your thoughts without.

I've dabbled back and forth with it myself. I think especially today with the emergence of diet prada type accounts, "fashion critics"/cancel culture toxicity has otherwise been normalized, making it harder to simply have these honest conversations. It'll get hijacked quick quick. Unfortunate because I consider this dialogue to be meaningful and beneficial for everyone. OP did a great job in his vid of balancing honesty//humor/observations/ tastefully alluding to certain individuals and vulture tendencies.

  • Yeah man it's such a bad influence on teenagers thinking they gotta waste all their money on clothes just so they can seem cool or popular or whatever and just conforming instead of just being comfortable with who they are. No wonder fakes are so popular because streetwear is just unaffordable but people want that cool factor of seeming richer than they are
