I got interested in fashion only recently, although things like carhartt hats and air maxes were around me for a long time -- coming off of childhood in graffiti which was at a crossover with ultras movement where im from it was almost forbidden to rock certain brands

like if you wore Stone Island and FP with NBs you could get checked literally once youre outside, it was wild back then. still remember wild vids of guys asking other guys to scratch their tattoos on camera with like stones and s***, they'd p much catch them on the street asking em to do it. some disturbing s***

these days I tell ppl about it and they look at me like im crazy -- there's no way people used to f*** people up over brands and clothes, especially now when ppl wear carhartts on the daily having no idea about whats what and how that even came about. the whole culture these days seems way less hostile, and I think its not that bad; back in the days you really actively had to keep yourself aware of what youre wearing and that took a toll on people from that gen. im mad derailing and thats basically a different convo but Ive been thinking ab that a lot and couldn't talk ab that to anybody

out of curiosity where are you from, always interested to hear about graff lol

over here it was nike dri fit caps and for shoes it was AM90, TN's and Tailwinds if you graffed, though during the 00s AF1s were sorta in uniform too

I've listened to rap music my entire life and have never tried to dress like a rapper. Fashion isn't music.

it is a form of gentrification tho, and it's nowhere near unheard of. the co-opting of especially black styles and cultures isn't a new thing

im from a mid-sized city in russia, not small enough for people to not know about this stuff but also not too huge. AMs were popular in those circles for sure for sure, if its somebody in a carhartt beanie with ams they either graff or not from around here lol. I wasn't even into that back then bc all that stuff was crazy expensive and I couldn't be bothered wearing fake s***, it was a miracle getting paint anyhow

also funny seeing ppl bombing in fancy stuff ie north face vests and s***. I figure its a New York thing where its not seen as fancy but I could be wrong

Lol they eventually made it so you had to show ID and explain what you're using paint for over here, I mean they didn't care either way. Luckily there was a domestic brand that was cheap as hell, like a dollar a can, not the greatest range of colours but gets the job done for bombing

Speaking of New York i lost my chance to go to 5 points I only managed to see it from the train when I visited there. I remember I always wanted fatigues because of Nas in a few of his videos but that s*** went for a premium here.

My own personal Graff uniform was a windbreaker, shorts, Wu Tang cap and whatever Nike's

I kinda miss graffiti being seen as a part of hip hop but surveillance is too high nowadays, for people getting into it at least

5 pointz was crazy, I remember spending so much time looking at a few pictures a had of it back then. no internet too, had to get that from 'graffiti compilation' cds that went from hand to hand

I tagged in the trashiest clothes I could find no backpack too, a black plastic bag with a cardboard inside, I looked like a hobo to ppl. you dont really want to stand out to others in how you look. it was eye-catching enough if you got paint on the regular; that means it can be snatched from you. ppl took shifts near the only graffiti store we had to rob guys, it was trouble for both sides. but going back to hobo looks I always loved how in graff you could do much with little, which is why looking at all the tools available to people today is wild. we had to actually get extinguishers from somewhere to do large tags

I too stopped at some point but I still work on my tags. its recreational for the most part. the surveillance is insane in russia so I still wonder how people manage to catch certain tags. I carry some stickers but its not nearly the same as it used to be

calling it gentrification is such a lame over exaggeration especially considering most of yall are atleast upper middle class. Its like when people use the word rape out of the context of actual rape.

Calling resellers landlords is also a super dumb take. nike dunks aren't a human right you will live without them the biggest issue with this video and everyone in this thread is the individualistic blaming. Why get mad at the guy trying to flip a pair of shoes and not get mad at nike?

I am mad at nike but I'm also mad at the resellers too. It's the same issue as landlords, people with excess income will buy up a good in this case nike dunks, and resell them to others at in inflated market value.

Many can afford a $120 shoe but not a $450 shoe especially when the value of the shoe is artificially increased by resellers holding more capital and having the luxury of pricing people out of the market.

It's the same mindset as landlords who buy up excess property, that are empty mind you, and sell it to others at a premium.

You're right nobody is entitled to a Nike Dunks or a PS5, and you're right Nike could make more (that's what GR is of course) but I ask.

If more people with increased capital are now having x100 entry the chance/probability of getting a shoe via the use of bots that you have only have a 1 entry chance of getting, and let's say they get 10 and sell 9 for a profit, while you get 0 they are using their excess capital to game the system, and price people out the market.

Which is literally the same system as gentrification as system of displacement in which people are priced out of their backyards as people move in or buy up land to sell rising the price of the property and pricing locals out the market in favor of a more affluent community

If resellers were selling shoes at MSRP yea sure it wouldn't be the same as landlords but they are using their excess capital to add more scarcity to the market just to hold more quantities to sell at a premium
