    Stuff like this:
When in history has this actually been the case

There have been no “good times” in history, life significantly improved in all metrics like last century. In the few times where life was marginally better before the 20th century, things deteriorated more because of unforeseen circumstances rather than people being complacent or something. And then those “hard times” didn’t even lead to a generation that picked things up or anything like that lol

Feel like ppl buy into concepts like this cuz they see it happen on an individual level when someone they know has a tough childhood and then rises above it and/or someone they know is spoiled and then doesn’t fulfill any of their potential...

they then take this small observed example and apply it to society as a whole because ppl find it hard to grasp the complexity of society and thus try to simplify it in order to make sense of it

    Makes sense to me

But like, it’s like one of those “common sense, of course giving people income would make them lazy” when that’s actually not true or supported by actual evidence

    The thought I had is

Just because life has improved in all metrics recently doesn't mean there weren't thriving civilizations that were able to enjoy themselves

    makes perfect sense imo

i mean i knew plenty of people when that 600$ unemployment was rolling around, they had no interest in going to/back to work. Idk if that was the point you were trying to make

These are the same people who blame all of the world's problems on kids getting candy even though they weren't first place

  • Aug 25, 2020

The goal is to make life easier for the next generation though. Hardships are inevitable but limiting them as much as we can is what we should strive for. Sounds like bs to me

I don’t think guys in Ancient Rome were “enjoying themselves” any more than guys in Congo are now

This was actually true for probably most of history

Like from the Crusades into the Renaissance, WW2 into today.

Just interesting how it’ll play out with technology, probably be worse tbh

    It's all relative though.

Back then they couldn't imagine the amount of leisure activities we have today

But Hitler basically saying this about Germany is what started WW2 in the first place

People keep saying UBI isn’t gonna work because people are just gonna rely on that instead of work. Not really, in most cases of providing basic income, there hasn’t been a reduction in work, in fact in many cases people who received the basic income actually worked more. That’s not to say UBI doesn’t have its own set of problems or is the best choice moving forward, but just that the “common sense” reason for why it wouldn’t work isn’t necessarily true
