This quote gives off red pill vibes these days but its saying that hardship can forge strength of character, the strong characters in history push forward despite resistance, that tends to make us complacent, and when we get complacent bad stuff happens.

Even tho “quality of life” has improved over the last couple hundred years, ppl are more isolated than ever and depression rates r up... I feel like it’s ultimately abt the sense of community and belonging that u feel that uplifts ur quality of life regardless of circumstance

Even if that was the case, it hasn’t worked in a cycle

    I never said it did.

A sense of community and belonging for ppl seems to ebb and flow w time and is definitely dependent on how ur local/global society is set up. Modern capitalist society is pushing some ppl toward isolation cuz they’re sold an ideal of individuality and personal success while the importance of community is minimized

This thread is very specifically disputing the claim that prosperity and decline work in cycles fueled by weak and strong men. We don’t know what depression rates were like before the modern era so we can hardly say if it was better or not, but given they were always complaining about one thing or another I’d imagine it’s not much higher these days than it was in the past

No, there is not more greed now than at any point in history, especially if by “now” you mean the 21st century.

No, wars were far more destructive in the past relative to human population than they are now. We’re taught about the rape of Nanking as if it was a horrible atrocity (which it was). Ancient scholars would have considered it a footnote. Even if we’re talking absolute numbers rather than relative, the deaths from warfare in the past were still ridiculously higher than they are at the present

No, the modern man isn’t the only one to concern himself with worldly possessions. Literally every single generation it’s doomers and old heads taking about “this generation has lost its morals and respect for their fellow man” when absolutely no generation in recorded history where either of the two at play

You guys have been saying the end of the world is coming soon for thousands of years now, the only thing I can see stopping us is nuclear warfare and as of now no world leader is insane enough to bring us to that point so I guess not

Climate change will be overcome, and even if it’s not, we won’t go extinct we’ll be nearly extinct and irreparably damaged. There’s no humanity escaping a nuclear war

There are some interesting pieces here, but you're forgetting that technological progress does not inherently result in a loss of "higher transcendental reality".

Science is about describing relationships between things, i.e. with this set of initial conditions how does nature react. Science is intrinsically unable to understand the essential nature of humans or stars or the Universe.

The fact that some people have taken its insights and extrapolated that to mean the world is a cold, mechanistic accident in which the only thing that matters is collecting and consuming (hence the relationship between materialism in a kind of metaphysical sense and materialism in terms of "i love to buy s***") is an unfortunate byproduct.

No reason why we can't enjoy technological progress while revitalizing ancient spiritual truths that are now backed by the modern neuroscience and physics. And already this is happening in very niche corners of the world. In fact, as more and more people turn into nihilistic doomers, I imagine that this is the direction society will turn to anyways.

Do you actually believe climate change will make this planet Venus? It will completely destroy human civilization and lead to the extinction of countless other species but it wouldn’t change the geological makeup of the planet. And please don’t try to paint me as a climate change denier, part of me feels like you’re on the verge of doing so

Not truly Venus, no, but I pretty much believe that modern society as we know it will be in the midst of falling or have already fallen by 2100. Billions dead from the heat, rampant crop failure, more extreme weather, coastal property underwater, wars over water, etc.

We've already baked in 2C of heat and we're really not showing any signs of stopping. Carbon capture is a pipe dream, space travel even moreso. I just don't see the logic in having hope.

Have hope because “the point of no return” has been pushed back for decades. Now of course I believe it’s real, man made, and will have a devastating impact if we don’t act, but we are indeed acting. The future president will take steps to reduce the climate change while the rest of the world, industrialized or not, have made their own commitments to clean energy, I mean maybe it doesn’t work out, but what’s the point in worrying about something you have no control over

Feel like ppl buy into concepts like this cuz they see it happen on an individual level when someone they know has a tough childhood and then rises above it and/or someone they know is spoiled and then doesn’t fulfill any of their potential...

they then take this small observed example and apply it to society as a whole because ppl find it hard to grasp the complexity of society and thus try to simplify it in order to make sense of it

Conservative values are based upon anecdotal evidence and confirmation bias up the ass. Any time they are presented with information that opposes that viewpoint they say it’s not real because “I know a guy who was poor and worked hard” or “I worked really hard so why can’t other people” while failing to recognize their privilege that was given to them in order to succeed
