any black artists that make off the beaten path ass music get put in this box where it’s borderline a novelty to listen to them, it’s the weirdest s*** ever, look at how Death Grips fans talk about their music lol, they make some of the most depressing and subversive content in hip-hop fathomable, and you go into their sub or even a comment box on YouTube, and it’s a bunch of niggas memeing and calling Ride a schizophrenic homeless man

they definitely would never talk about a band like Radiohead, Pink Floyd or whatever hipster darling band like that at all, it’s literally even a meme that Radiohead fans are holier than thou and pretentious they might poke fun at these bands here and there but far lower than the level that these other artists get, the s***s weird

Are they saying his image has been overly commercialized after death to the point people who aren't familiar with his work are like repping him or sum ?

yeah DOOM as an artist has essentially become commodified to signify esteemed taste, or he’s just kinda of been thrown into that “legendary dead dude” canon that your average c***might know about, but they don’t know his music but feel obliged to at least know the dude’s stuff on a surface level out of “respect” or whatever the hell it is

DOOM was always sort of an artist that floated in that “i don’t listen to rap but” space, however i think it’s fairly obvious it’s been exacerbated a lot more ever since he passed away, it honestly seems like his image is taking precedence over his actual music which is pretty sad, i wouldn’t say this issue is unique to him at all though

I think that’s what happens with a lot of eccentric black artists or artists in general who have this very iconic image.

I remember people doing this with Prince after his death and some folks do this with Outkast

i think you're making some good points generally but i also have to disagree with the two examples cos i feel like i've seen LOADS of stuff making fun of radiohead online over the years and conversely lots of extremely pretentious stuff from death grips fans about their music in the same time period. unfortunately the latter has a lot of 4chan weirdos in their fanbase and it must be said and i don't mean this as a pejorative not neurotypical people and both lend themselves to certain aesthetics and humour attaching themselves to the band.

but yes i agree that the basic music bro radiohead fan is definitely known for self seriousness

Would his fanbase be insanely cringe in the flesh at a show now compared to, say, 2009? yes. But have you been to an Earl show recently?

If anything, its the Eric Andre-ification of underground rap that's the problem

You're 100% right and what you're observing in my opinion is subconscious racism or stereotyping. Marketing rules the world. It also rules the music game. Most of the popular mainstream artists were marketed or pushed to us in one way or another. This created acceptance in the mainstream for them, since if they're being pushed to us they must have somethin going on, no? This is not just your Kanye West's or your Travis Scott's, but also smaller maybe a bit more off the wall (at least for mainstream) artists like Carti, Young Thug or Yeat who wouldn't be accepted if they werent pushed to us by music labels.

The smaller artists you're describimg are much more off the beaten path, but arent really marketed or pushed to anyone. So when people do stumble upon them via fans you know what happens next. They can't relate so they make certain assumptions about the act, "oh he's ironic", "oh it's trolling and they're big brained" etc... its hard to relate to the struggles of an individual of a minority who faces challenges you can't perceive. People these days don't even have the sympathy to look after themselves properly, let alone their immediate family. Very rarely do people actually try to empathize since most people are inherently self-centered. Why would they bother for a random music artist?

And since the majority of hip hop consumers these days are white people in the USA (due to numbers and demographics) you can see how the status quo we have now came to exist.

yeah don’t get me wrong i def see like a lot of Radiohead = virgin memes, but even then it just seems like people are at least willing to take the music a lot more seriously than like some Moor Mother for example, i think it’s a mixture of how the internet is largely post-ironic and it’s super cool to “not take anything serious xD” but it’s just a little odd that it’s primarily black artists that get this treatment disproportionately within the music sphere—while bands like Black Country New Road can make some passable indie rock (if i wanna be nice, lol) and be called geniuses for it

agreed - i think there's definitely something to unpack about all of this, even if people get mad about twitter threads or w/e lol.

i wonder how much of this is to do with a lot of the cooler hip hop at the time being this sort of blog/online led thing in the early 10s before exploding into cultural dominance in the intervening decade. and a lot of these reddit/4chan/very online people coming up with that, maybe not having an inbuilt knowledge of the genre and not being able to reconcile enjoying it with not really regarding it as 'serious' music prior to that. there's probably something in there for somebody smarter than me to dig into!
