Are they saying his image has been overly commercialized after death to the point people who aren't familiar with his work are like repping him or sum ?
To be fair this has been going on even while he was alive. Guess the biggest difference back then was him signing off on it.
On the real though, lotta collabs DOOM has had was through his own gasdrawls merch site and Stones Throw. Really dope stuff with Nike, Supreme, Bape, KAWS, etc if you can peep the archives.
Don't think this "The Jean-Michel Basquiatification" thing is fair, especially when DOOM was cool with his image being used. Likely because him and his family were making money off it.
this site hates on big words cause 85% of em illiterate but tweet would have a point if not for the fact @op that, this twitter dude been late.
Late as f***.
DOOM's elusiveness made his likeness a hot commodity waaaaaaay before he passed. Hell, DOOM played into it himself by the fact you sometimes might go to a show an it would be a WHOLE NOTHER NIGGA in a doom mask on stage that would show up (yasiin bey will always be a real nigga for being a doppleganger and doing the entirety of accordion)
the "post-death interest" is something that everybody in every medium of art goes through so that's nothing special on DOOM's part.
But a lot of fans around the Madvillainy/Adult Swim era really put him up to some mythical "real hip hop and conscious rap" when a good majority of his content is 5 percenter rap and grimy/misogynist rap.
Shoutout to one of the greatest ___ police song of all time.
RIP DOOM.
I don't get this really. DOOM himself stated he did it for the money, like u know, to feed his family. He never gave a f*** to the level that he would care about who going to the concerts or who bought the albums or how people interacted with what he put out. It was a job to him the way I see it. He was just very unique in the way he did it and as usual some people gotta take it too far with the worship.
Then u also always got the crowd that just hop on the "mysterious" hype wagon. That s*** always get worse when the artist pass.

All facts but I think the OP means it’s going to go even further than this. You’re gonna see Uniqlo, H&M and s*** coming out with MF doom tees. People who probably never heard a song or even listen to rap are gonna be rocking s*** with his branding on it because of what it’s supposed to represent.
But like people have said itt as long as his family is seeing a cut

but like @localblaccmane said, he been did stuff with companies like Nike and Supreme.
If anything he would have been did things with bigger companies like Uniqlo and H&M if his trademark personality didn't put off folks (so many deals bro fumbled just cause he didn't show up to some meeting lol).
It's not like Basquiat where people just butchered what bro originally wanted. DOOM was with that from the get go.
Doom been an icon in rap nerd culture since like 10 years before he died
way longer, id argue like 2005
he was on adult swim and s*** of course this was gonna happen
plus dude family eat off the shirts & s*** lol like so what
You're 100% right and what you're observing in my opinion is subconscious racism or stereotyping. Marketing rules the world. It also rules the music game. Most of the popular mainstream artists were marketed or pushed to us in one way or another. This created acceptance in the mainstream for them, since if they're being pushed to us they must have somethin going on, no? This is not just your Kanye West's or your Travis Scott's, but also smaller maybe a bit more off the wall (at least for mainstream) artists like Carti, Young Thug or Yeat who wouldn't be accepted if they werent pushed to us by music labels.
The smaller artists you're describimg are much more off the beaten path, but arent really marketed or pushed to anyone. So when people do stumble upon them via fans you know what happens next. They can't relate so they make certain assumptions about the act, "oh he's ironic", "oh it's trolling and they're big brained" etc... its hard to relate to the struggles of an individual of a minority who faces challenges you can't perceive. People these days don't even have the sympathy to look after themselves properly, let alone their immediate family. Very rarely do people actually try to empathize since most people are inherently self-centered. Why would they bother for a random music artist?
And since the majority of hip hop consumers these days are white people in the USA (due to numbers and demographics) you can see how the status quo we have now came to exist.
yeah it’s a mixture of rockism (as in rock is the only genre that’s worth being considered high art) and people essentially refusing to take (c)rap seriously as an artform, the key with marketing/labels is that (like you said) if an artist is being pushed and promoted heavy, it must mean that they’re doing something worth promoting lmao, they also set the standards of what’s worth taking seriously in the first place
if something isn’t tethered to the machine or is unapologetically indie/against the mainstream people don’t feel obliged to take it too seriously, or if they even do they would never compare it to their cherished artists that they grew up on, let alone take it as seriously, it’s just funny quirky black music
?? Fr what’s the original photo look like
I believe that's a picture of JPEGMAFIA performing at Pitchfork on stage, but his body has been cropped out and superimposed onto some stock image of white college kids partying lol
I don't even rock with JPEGMAFIA's music like that but yeah this was proven a while ago to be fake

Like you gotta be pretty out of touch to think those types of white kids are going en masse to the JPEGMAFIA show
This is a real pic of him in the crowd at a show of his
The iCarly-fication of underground rap, basically
Not helping me understand
You really a failed hipster if you’re trying to gatekeep doom in 2023. Maybe this s*** would fly before 2010 lol

Somehow you found a pic equally as white but minus sports jerseys lol
I'm confused. DOOM has been merched since as long as I can remember lol the very least 2010

That’s not what anyone in here is doing
Just a***yzing the different facets of his fandom
Always thought this album cover gave bionicle vibes
That cover is a great example of his team/Daniel playing into what people in here are saying with the idea of his s*** being “mythological”
What is the reference? Basically that he's being revered after passing or something?

I think it's that the symbolism of the mask has become a signifier of "taste" in such a way that it's become divorced from the music. Like a person today might look at a Basquiat painting and think "oh that's a basquiat, therefore I like it" without every considering what he was trying to say with the piece. The tweet in OP isn't really trying to gatekeep, just lamenting that the iconography has become a product or token more than a message

I hear what you're saying and appreciate the response but it does kinda seem like gatekeeping
