Just got out of the theatre from my second viewing and holy s***... so many things make sense now. The movie lays a lot of things out cohesively from beginning to end. Obviously there’s a s\*\*\* ton of stuff in regards to symbolism and messages not to be taken literally. But a lot of the visions/delusions we see later on in the film are literally images and dreams based off Pattinsons experiences. Pattison’s feelings about killing his coworker as a logger(blond dude surrounded by logs in the water) got him feeling guilt. The hex Dafoe put on Pattison(That wild god-like eye beam shot) got him feeling paranoid. The mermaid really got him lusting but also in fear. This movie is deep as f\*\*\*. Amazing

huh, maybe i just got s*** taste. i thought this movie was good, entertaining, but not amazing much at all.

i enjoyed how restrained it was -- felt very focused for the most part, but then the strangeness felt weakened because it wouldn't commit to the possibilities it was trying to set up. sure that creates the alluring "ambiguity" of films like this, but this seemed like ambiguity for the sake of entertainment only, which means there isn't really a whole lot to think about regarding whatever the viewer finds ambiguous.

yea I definitely feel this. might as well have gone all-in on the weirdness, they were too reserved with it.

I keep thinking bout this movie, the hallucinatory scenes and the descent into madness were so great. This movie pulls off the Lovecraftian horror vibe better than any I’ve seen.

Edit: I see a lot of Edgar Allen Poe influence as well

Toxic Masculinity and the animalistic qualities that come with it is sprinkled all over the last scene with the light. Dude pretty much murdered Tom in cold blood(Winslow’s shoulder wound is non-existent and nowhere to be seen at the end). The hysterical distorted scream is pretty much a huge nutbust on some “I finally got what you kept from me. Motherfucker I won. Ultimate satisfaction right here.” Which, on another level tells me... dude killed Tom, went upstairs, literally got so blinded by the light, knocked himself off balance from shielding his eyes, fell down the stairs, dies, end scene is his pineal gland kicking in with the paranoia of that Hex. S***s wild y’all. I hate to come off as “reaching” but I REALLY enjoyed this film hahaha

That scene near the end where Pattinson's screams turn into distorted static

Are y'all kidding. What happened to this site. You had to be British to understand one complete sentence, plus there were basically only two people in the entire movie, and the whole film was in black and white. It reminded me of my childhood days in the DMV, when they had VHF channels and UHF channels, while on the UHF side, they showed British movies on Channel 26, and Channel 32, with two actors per movie, sometimes speaking in a foreign language, were you had to read the English transcript at the bottom of the screen, even though you could barely understand the actors anyway.

I haven't been this disappointed in a long time. I can't see what this movie really did for anybody Black. The only thing it did for me was bring back childhood memories when I didn't have any bills.
