i remember back then thinking i downloaded a bad rip or something and spent hours maybe days looking for a "good" one without any clipping and then i learned it was actually meant to sound like that
I wouldn't say they are fantasticly mastered, they could do with more dynamics and air or headroom, they suit the music tho I guess. MBDTF isn't the first high profile album he s*** on, Oasis' What's the story morning glory too
Fair, I mean C3 blew me away form how good the engineering was tbh. I actually thought it wasn't gonna sound good considering the time period it came out and it's Lil Wayne
Letting DR determine wether something is engineered right is like diagnosing a patiant only by their temperature. DR values can be misleading, I'm sure some think the MBDTF vinyl is mastered better than the CD because its DR is higher but it's cut from the same file the CD was pressed with. In that case, vinyl shows better DR because it's not only the music file that's being tested, it's also the needle running over grooves.
There's been times where I've chosen a CD with a lower DR over a CD with a higher DR. If I had've just went by DR I'd have gone with a CD with less favorable EQ or less optimal tape source.
I really agree with this, nowadays the DR measurements don't really mean much and doesn't determine the sound quality of an album. There are other factors to consider like how well is the album mixed? or the source?
Plus there are albums with very low DR that I quite enjoyed and thought it sounded fine

yea thats all true but op is obsessed with this stupid s*** so i thought the website could be useful
All you need to do to prove OP right is listen to that God awful crackling with each piano note on the opening to Runaway. For everyone claiming it’s stylistic to compress the s*** out of your album, listen to that part which is obviously supposed to be a dramatic break from all the maximalism of the rest of the album and ask yourself: why the f*** is it still so loud it sounds like there’s something wrong with my headphones?
maybe instead of interpreting the piano as being a break from the maximalism, the piano can be interpreted as still part of the maximalism, hence why it sounds in line with other parts of the album
Hate to say it but this is one area where Cole does better than Ye
I remember reading some s*** about them about purposefully not playing the loudness war on FHL.
trying to keep the dynamics intact
how can people have this opinion?
you want some clean sound? go listen to everything else
there, done.
MBDTF is Goated as it is.
Late Registration has the best mixing and mastering
It still sounds really fresh
facts.

not disagreeing with OP, speaking in general
but a lot of ppl act like engineering is an exact science because its all technical n s***. but its not, if that s*** is "terrible", it was made on purpose. and best believe that they had access to the top industry engineer to fix it if they wanted it.
also, if you've ever made music. you know that its a whole, sometimes you clean some stuff up or pull something out and the whole feel falls apart. maybe OP thinks MBDTF could have been better, one could argue that it could also be way worse.
I swear imma get a degree on this s*** when corona over

yeah regardless of interpretation, I just want the music to sound like an accurate reproduction of the performance. I don't hear no crackle when I play a piano. no crackle on the unmastered version sounds a lot better to me
Why does the guy getting interviewed sound butt hurt as s***.
i'm p sure he's bothered with a lot of engineers/mastering ppl who assume that Billie's album shouldn't have even come close to getting its accolades for mixing/mastering/whatever it got cus it was essentially entirely a bedroom project, and the idea of that gets a lot of professional (as in, employed by studio or smthn) engineers/mastering ppl angry cus they think their employment status confers superior ability, whereas billie/finneas' accolade suggests otherwise
i think the dude who's answering the q in the video is on the side of billie though, as he says that all that matters is the end product, and whether you're a "professional" by their standards isn't a necessary qualification

yea i get it too; i was listening to mbdtf the other day right after i finished 808s and was like ...nah can't do it today
it's a harsh jump, and i can understand why kanye ultimately thought it was the appropriate choice to commit to for the album, but i gotta be in the right mood nowadays lol, whereas 808s or LR i can throw on any day and be like

yeah honestly can't fault him for it. it probably contributed to the album's success in a way cus most people aren't listening for this stuff and the louder your music the more it stands out on the radio. all i know is i replaced the release version with the unmastered version in my library, and i ain't ever looking back.

Right, that's why FHD sounds fantastic all around. On the other hand Born Sinner feels over compressed
