    Yall do realize the government is doing this just so US social media companies would take over, right?

    Acting like these teens who are 24/7 in tiktok would simply stop using social media once the US bans it lol.

    Obviously they want the data themselves instead of to go to China, I don't think anyone is really saying otherwise.

    One guy is saying this is "positive" Coz tiktok is addictive.

    Ppl who are addicted to tiktok will start getting addicted to shorts or reels basically lol.

  • I don't get why you guys are defending algorithm based social media so hard when the evidence is growing that it's causing mental stress and illnesses with younger people as the years go on

    If this was a discussion back in 2009 where s*** was brand new and nothing was catered to us in echo chambers then I would agree that outrage is ridiculous. The boomers were only right in hindsight, and that's about it.

  • And yeah I know it's hypocritical with FB and Youtube existing. I have the same thoughts for those companies too. US is just being antichina obv.

    i understand, i just find it peculiar that the majority opinion here is to ban tiktok.

    but with addictive substances like p*** and weed and booze, most would likely agree they should all be legal.

    if anything i would agree on a hardstop age restriction.

    …there’s age restrictions and ethical concerns pertaining to substance use too…

    yeah idk if an all ought ban is the way to go either.

    the government sucks in general with regulating tech, and tech is just gonna keep getting more complicated

    I’m saying that your feed is catered to your interests. Are you really blaming the behavior of some humans on a platform? Tiktok has MANY different sides to it just like any other social media

    Highly suggest you read Jonathan Haidt's "Coddling of the American Mind".

    His substack is great as well; https://jonathanhaidt.substack.com/p/the-teen-mental-illness-epidemic

    Lots of us who are old enough to remember know that 2012 was the last year the world 'felt normal' and it's largely due to social media.

    So social media in general, not just tiktok

  • its still hilarious to me that china has a kid safe mode that they keep from us tiktok users

    the implication that exposing kids to tiktok unfiltered is damaging to a degree that it can be used as a geopolitical weapon

    tiktok is literally eroding the minds of millions

    I can name you a dozen of things that have equal or worse effects on humans than Tiktok lol. End of the day it’s not my business how people decide to spend their time. I personally don’t use the app like that and if it went away I wouldn’t care but I wouldn’t be jumping in joy singing praises either. That’s just corny to me

    so everyone who has mentioned tiktok having a problem with minor safety is a pedo according to you? because it must be on their feed and matching their interests for them to know about it? just buy a gun and blow your brains out you f***ing idiot

    @edumist why is tiktok bad

  • Mar 3, 2023

    A lot of y'all act like short form content isn't everywhere now. If tiktok somehow got fully banned in the US people would just do IG reels or youtube shorts. Pointless to hone in on tiktok

  • Mar 3, 2023

    So the problem is the fear of spying or is that a digestible excuse for the masses

  • bossyyyyy

    @edumist why is tiktok bad

    never said anything about it being “bad” but it does contribute to a lot of commodification of interests (namely spirituality, philosophy, the New Age is pretty rife on there) which i have a pretty big problem with, decreased attention spans—there even was a couple stories i saw quite awhile back that said the adamant use of filters to change one’s appearance to be more attractive can contribute to body dysmorphia etc.

    ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8393543

    ”This study was aimed at examining the mediating effect of depression, anxiety, and stress between TTUD and memory loss, focused on adolescents and divided by gender. TTUD was higher for female participants than male participants. This was the same as in early research on smartphone use disorder 12. TTUD is positively linked with memory loss (H1).”

    ”TikTok use disorder (TTUD) is positively linked to memory loss, and it is also positively linked to depression, anxiety, and stress. Depression, anxiety, and stress are positively linked to memory loss. Furthermore, depression, anxiety, and stress have a mediating effect between TTUD and memory loss.”

    (caveat) ”This research investigated a homogeneous group of participants from a normal senior high school in China. This sample was not representative of all adolescents. Generalizing the results will depend on further research.”

    ”A partial mediation effect of depression and anxiety between TTUD and forward digit span is shown. A partial mediation effect of depression, anxiety, and stress between TTUD and backward digit span is also shown. These results also show gender differences. Attention should be given to male students, who have more depression, anxiety, and stress than female students; they also have more memory loss.”

    im not wholly anti social media or anything (i personally love IG + Discord) and i struggle with regulating my smartphone use myself, so i was personally averse to using Tik Tok since i already battle with some of the stuff listed above^^ i don’t particularly care whether Tik Tok goes or not, but i wouldn’t be hurt to see it gone

    If the problem the government had was with algorithm based short format videos f***ing kids up and not foreign access to US markets, we would see a vastly different response (no response)

    TikTok is not good, but acting like the US Govt is doing this for the sake of kids is crazy
