And El Scorcho isn’t even the highlight of the album, at least to me!

I know I’ve stated this itt already but I can’t stress it enough: it’s insane how if you stack up all the b sides of the blue album and Pinkerton you get enough material that are worth of two albums that honestly are as good as the albums!

Here is one I love that was both tested in the sessions of Blue and Pinkerton, it’s been on heavy rotation along with Friend Of A Friend (white album bonus):

    Blue take:

    Pinkerton take:

It’s one of those Pixies-ish Rivers gem, something about this one is infinitely cool, maybe the clash of how massive the guitars sound v the drums that kicks a laid back beat, if that makes sense, idk I feel there’s a dope contrast in there

But yeh the history of Pinkerton is really fascinating, altho i’m not sure it was a hated as the legend now says, but more so undersold (understandably as it isn’t hit factor as blue, it was even Rivers himself mission: prove himself to the critics, ironically in some way even tho things have changed)

But man they just magically age like wine really

I think the white album is up there too tbh

New acoustic performance of Hero !!

Now this is actually interesting because it’s not just Rivers himself, the rest of the band joins him, this is kind like a new recorded version of the song since it’s not live

The most intriguing section is the solo part where Rivers does this classical infused twist on it??? i believe this is heavily a hint towards to what’s in store for Ok Human and its symphonic arrangement since this is what Rivers is fully working on right now as we speak, so this gives us a first impression off of it kinda I think?

💬 QUOTE OF THE DAY 💬

    From 2015:

Songfacts: At last count, there have been seven tribute albums for the Pixies. Which have been some of your favorite renditions of Pixies tunes by other artists?

    Frank Black: "Velouria" by Weezer.

    Favorite song on it?

if i may participate: mine has to be Surf Wax America because of how it captures to me the peak of a good rock song, it’s upbeat, fun, hype, it still sounds young today, yet it’s melodic and a great homage to the greats (The Beach Boys, whom i’m tempted to do a thread about in similar fashion to this one) lyrically but also on a bridge that breaks it down and takes it back way back to a pure Beach Boys stripped down vocal harmonies section and then picks up, what a blast! Brian should be proud

killer song live that speaks to everyone, it just has everything you know?

it’s music that is smart but doesn’t sound in your face smart, it’s light and fun, and to me that’s talent that is underrated, because it’s easy to make one light song with no weight or a song that is very heavy and artsy, but to balance these two out is a crafted skill of someone that knows what he’s doing, you feel me?

either that or Only In Dreams

interesting fact about Only In Dreams: one time Rivers said how ppl take the lyrics literally and think it’s about getting a girl when in reality it’s a metaphor of him and his artistic process, his muse... 🤔

Ash covered it too and pretty rad ngl to see a popular rock band covering a weezer deep cut that is prolly their most epic song, and not just playing it live or let alone recording it in studio but also performing it on a tv show, again what other band can we name for their generation that pulls that influence in hindsight?

    and you?

Buddy holly is the greatest written pop song of all time. Every second essential, jumping from hook to hook. Rivers was always trying to formulate the perfect pop tune. It’s incredible that not only did he accomplish that so early in his career, but that he had to be convinced to include it on Blue album.
Perhaps say it ain’t so or only in dreams or across the sea will be considered greater achievements, but if I had to pick the song that I can listen to over and over again and never get bored, it’s buddy holly.

fr tho god bless Ric Ocasek on that, what a legacy, from The Cars to producing weezer when they were no ones and insisting to put Buddy Holly on it! he is also responsible for Island In The Sun in how he told Rivers to keep that one (through many other demos Rivers had and sent on which Ric gave back insightful criticism) so they could work on it together on the Green album that he produced, and look how that turned out!

kinda telling of Rivers inspirations too tho dude was so into his bag he had gems stacked that even something like Buddy Holly didn’t impress him himself or didn’t feel like he had to hold onto, or Island In The Sun too in some degree as he didn’t think much of it at first i guess?

but i respect your take tho real talk your own “essential” is more important, valuable and relevant than what is considered “the best achievement” technically speaking

funny is that he had to be convinced for the video too! Spike Jonze was only up and coming, a start of a great collaboration

i just found out about this video, i know it’s about the one he did for Undone but it’s really cool, some stuff i never heard before like how he says Rivers insisted he didn’t want anything pretentious (ok that’s my goat)

    that might interest you @Bad_Finger_Boogie

i also like the term he uses to describe the blue album: contagious

Crazy how he got a Grammy now huh, wish they would work together again!

Imagine a green album without island in the sun. The centerpiece to the album as far as I’m concerned.

It’s always hard to read rivers. At some points he feels like the most self aware guy in the world, and other times it feels like he’s not in on the joke at all.

i agree (altho O Girlfriend is maybe my fav? love the live version of that one on the Maladroit tour where Rivers switched up the solo and extended it, beautiful and really does the song justice more than the studio take with this gimmick of the guitar solo just picking up the verses vocals melodies), centerpiece is a perfect term indeed and it’s weird to say this bc it’s their most popular song but: Island In The Sun is underrated

hear me out, we all take it for granted, cute song, cute animals videos by Spike Jonze (interesting fact: reason there’s only 3 members in it was because back then bassist Mikey Welsh attempted suicide -Rest in Peace brother..- and was at a hospital, they thought of bringing back Matt Sharp for the shoot but left that idea, kinda crazy to think what could’ve been) and all, it’s celebrated as a cute song, that’s my point, but in reality it’s a sad song, very sad dark song, listen to the lyrics more closely at the end: we’ll never feel bad anymore the whole song is a daydream of someone hurting

Rivers loves that contrast and has played a lot on that

But your comment on him is so spot on it’s not even funny lol, there’s so many stories i can think of and be like was he not aware or what was he thinking? when he’s one of the smartest dude! very confusing
