MBDTF
Reason I put MBDTF next to illmatic is because it's the next definitive rap Album.
Illmatic had the 90's
2000's had no definitive album
2010's was MBDTF
In 2022 Whole Lotta Red or Ūp 2 Me is closer than any of these
End of Transmission
They aren’t even popular enough to be in the convo before those albums, that’s even without considering other factors
pop = thriller
rap = playboi carti
rnb = partynextdoor 1 + 2
soul = </3²
rock = whole lotta red
metal = music
Immaculate list but I don't know what this 'Thriller' album is. Maybe try replacing whatever that is with Olivia Rodrigo's Sour (2021)
This is pure “I just started listening to music in 2013” energy
no it’s the sounds of right now
that’s what I’m saying these lists would constantly evolve with the genres they’re supposed 2 represent
End of Transmission
Nah, Ready to Die >
that may not even be the quintessential east coast hip hop album (illmatic or reasonable doubt)
you’re proving my point that one album can’t define the genre
This is pure “I just started listening to music in 2013” energy
cantinflas avi stfu
how does that refute my point
End of Transmission
if the sound from back then is still influencing today's sounds
Heavily.
Then it should still stay in the Convo

Illmatic had the 90's
2000's had no definitive album
2010's was MBDTF
2000s had GRODT stop the cap.
They aren’t even popular enough to be in the convo before those albums, that’s even without considering other factors
Jus bc some s*** was poppin in 2008 doesn’t make it representive of a genre

What the f*** is illmatic influencing right now?
the genre has evolved, music has evolved s*** doesn’t sound the way it did unless they’re doing revivalism

Blueprint and GROTD were definitely the definitive of the 2000s imo
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea for Indie Folk
DJ Rashad - Double Cup for Footwork
Burial - Untrue for Dubstep
Skrillex - Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites for Brostep
Daft Punk - Homework for French House
Burial Untrue dubstep?
Burial Untrue dubstep?
it is dubstep, it's just the skrillex type s*** took the term over completely lol

def taking that one microphones album over nmh for indie folk
Because it is? lol Innervisions is Soul music and What’s Going On is literally Rhythm & Blues. Go look it up
are you saying What's Going On is not a soul album?
the general consensus is definitely not that one is a soul album and the other isn't, and obviously soul falls under the huge "rhythm and blues" umbrella which can be used a few different ways anyway. but that type of 70s music I typically don't see it described as "rhythm and blues" where for something like James Brown's pre-funk period I see both terms used commonly
where do you want me to look it up?
None of those albums are similar to Thriller
Thriller is a concise album and almost every song is a hit
I get that but at the end of the day when you take away the relativity to the album’s 9 tracks, Thriller literally has 7 huge classic smashes. Those albums I named have around the same number of classic smashes, and are the ONLY hiphop albums with that amount of classic smashes. Grad is up there too but noticeably below the others in that regard
Jus bc some s*** was poppin in 2008 doesn’t make it representive of a genre
End of Transmission
You can’t minimize the enduring impact and love of the albums I named by saying the year they were the most popular
this mentality is the bane of decent music discussion
End of Transmission

Hm, I wouldn’t call it “the” dubstep album myself. It borrows a lot from ambient uk bass/garage 2step. I get what you’re saying about skrillex f***ing the term up. Anyway, it doesn’t really matter anyway, I was just surprised more than anything. I wouldn’t even know what I would classify as “THE” dubstep album.
that may not even be the quintessential east coast hip hop album (illmatic or reasonable doubt)

No one putting reasonable doubt over ready to die
def taking that one microphones album over nmh for indie folk
fax The Glow Pt 2>>>
So for rap.
Would we define them by era then?
Like boom bap
Gangsta
Conscious
Luxury
Etc..
Not era just the sub genres
Street
Conscious
Gangsta
Drill
Trap
Melodic
Lyrical
Then there is albums that are traditionally all around praises by all hip hop fans regardless of what style of rap they prefer. It’ll be hard to really give rap a “It” album tbh

In case no-one told you before- that “end of transmission” gimmick is corny asf.
