    here we go again 🙄

I cant force myself to love it

Its just very frustrating, Alex Garland could do so much more if he wanted to

And worst of all is that he went on to make f***ing MEN

    Very inconsistent director so far

I will die on that hill and have spoken on it countless times

Nothing more than a 3.5/5 for me

It literally offers nothing new to the concept of A.I. and nothing really stuck out for me in terms of visual presentation, music & sound, characters etc

Its just fine, but i dont think its mind blowing in the slightest

Contract that with Annihilation which actually takes risks in its concept, has one of the most original and memorable scores of the past decade, and hard hitting scenes like the body horror scene, the bear with human scream or the lighthouse sequence

This is all my personal opinion ofc

To me, Annihilation is less consistent. Some of NaPor’s acting is weird, the flashbacks never really pull the weight they’re trying to, some of the side characters feel awkward or unexplored. But the concept is awesome sci-fi, the score is epic, the ambition is there.

I feel like there’s a lot of texture in the three person dance of Ex Machina. I think it’s talking about gender in a way which I haven’t entirely figured out, cause I feel like your allegiance can switch each time you watch it. And there’s just like, screenwriting fundamentals that feel really crisp.

Annihilation does have some flaws but me personally i’d rather have a film have some not to be overlooked flaws but that does reach extreme highs that stay in my mind forever than a more “consistent” film that never goes beyond “its good” and leaves no real impression on me

But like i said, thats just my experience. Plenty of people do love that film. I just don’t see anything special in it and don’t find it that entertaining either

That’s fair. Pretty consistent with your love of Gaspar Noe tbh lol.

Spot on, even being the #1 fan in the world probably of Enter the Void, even i would say there’s dull moments in there

But those dull moments don’t withhold the film from being a personal 10/10 when the overall experience always feels so profound and soul shaking to me

I really care about the impact a film leaves on me. When i think of a film and it can instantly transport me back to certain feelings i felt during a watch, then i know i liked it generally

Respect, respect. It’s crazy how he was able to achieve that same effect in a different register with Vortex. The last montage hits with so much weight.

I think the moments you spend watching a film are just the surface. How does it linger? That’s the true test of great art.

    Fr, look at Twin Peaks

Arguably the coolest, most interesting tv show of all time

Nobody really thinks about that stretch of a couple episodes that were trash in szn 2 when Lynch left for a bit

We all think of all the great characters, moments and mysteries of that world

    As long as it sticks

I mean 3.5/5 is technically above average, which isn’t a bad score.

That lighthouse sequence still one of the scariest things I’ve seen recently
