I think you're being overly negative about the situation just so you can one up black people on some "but it's not your culture tho!"

Also what about when foreign black people appropriate American black culture? Like UK rap for example. You won't see any Americans saying their exploiting the culture, because their still marginalized black people regardless. They might say it's trash, but not exploitative

How ? I literally said the positive outweighs the negatives lol.

UK rap isnt the similar at all lol

UK rap is cultural appreciation. The same way that uk drill over here is cultural appreciation, same with afrobeats and dancehall. An effort has been to learn about these style of music and be influence by it and using it in context. It's not like they took very spiritual and religious native american chants and sample them in a song and sold it lol

    Oh THAT'S appreciation. Got it.

There is no UK drill over here. All drill music originates from Chicago and all rap originates from New York. Rap stems from the unique experience of African Americans in this country. But them taking the only culture black people dominate and can truly identify with because we've been removed from our original one isn't exploitative? Interesting double standard. Like I said it's some self hate there

Yes it is, it's being used in context and not clashing with other cultures lol

What have u never heard of pop smoke and fivio, that's clearly uk drill

And you do know African immigrants and jamaican immigrants have ties to the creation of hip hop right ? I mean dj kool herc, the founder of hip hop is jamaican and the dj was based on jamaican sound clashes and the idea of a mc is based on african griots. That's cultural appreciation, nothing wrong w that.

What beyonce did is obviously not similar to the music scenarios

It's clashing with another culture if it's taking a form of music that is used to express the unique experiences of African Americans and making it about somewhere else. UK drill rappers arent talking about police brutality in America right? It's being used out of context.

That has literally nothing to do with s***. Every form of music has its origins somewhere else your just trying to discredit Americans at this point

I'm not discrediting americans. I'm literally american lol ur just being dense

How can hip hop be solely about the unique experiences of AA when the three pioneers/creators of hip hop were all from the Caribbeans ?

By ur logic americans are appropriating dancehall, afrobeats and uk drill. Which they aren't.

Africans use being called african booty scratchers 18 years ago in grade school as a excuse to hate niggas lmao

It’s not an excuse. I have fam that got beat up even shot at by black Americans for simple fact that they were Haitian. So it’s not even as simple as namecalling

Black Americans been crying out for acceptance for decades to get the door shut in their faces. Forget the movement to reconnect in the 80s-early 90s before niggas decided its just not gonna happen? Black American culture is seen as cool, hip and for everybody since forever. Nobody wants their kid to date one though, because we don't have a culture that resembles a continental African one. Our culture is only recognized as some music and vernacular. We don't wear African fashions unless someone has an identity crisis and is in that Dashiki phase. Our cultural customs are different, that doesn't make us lost, doesn't make our culture disposable. It's real and tangible and ever changing because that's what we had to do for survival.

Caribbeans & Afro-Latinos are more recognizable to continental Africans because the cultural retention was a lot better since during slavery, they kept bringing over new Africans (in the US the focus was on breeding to save money). I would say the tension in the U.S. Is because Caribbeans & Africans aid in the model minority "myth" /weapon against Black Americans. There was a study done about being Black in the workplace. Black Americans won't get hired over a Caribbean or African for the same job because they're seen as more professional and cultured. People use it to say they work harder than us (usually immigrants coming here aren't refugees when they're Black. They already have degrees and ways to join a certain class), are civilized, etc,.

For the most part, Caribbeans & Black Americans live amongst each other in the same class. Africans tend to live in a different class. There weren't any African kids in school with me. All them kids went to nicer schools in better neighborhoods.

There's less tension with Caribbeans & Afro-Latinos. Just to address it now, all Afro-Latinos don't think they're not Black, that's only kind of a meme with Dominicans and there's plenty of proud Afro-Dominicans.

In the end we're all Black, and tbh, I'm glad Afrodescendants came up with ways to appreciate their Blackness when their various African heritages became distant. You have to remember there's no one singular tribe we descend from as descendants. It's literally up to 50+. There is no reconnecting with 50 different cultures. We're Black, being Black is good enough, some people need to accept that. Some BAs need to stop accepting what our school system and media tells us about the continent, and do the research ourselves. It doesn't have to be on some "I'm lost and need to reconnect" s***, you aren't lost, but you can educate yourself enough to know Africa isn't some ancestral homeland that freezed in time.

  • Aug 20, 2020

I'm gonna say by far, and f***ing oddly enough, Haitians get some of the most diaspora pile ons I've ever witnessed. Not those of the continent. I think y'all need to stop taking jokes the same as actual cultural insults, violence and disrespect. Haitians get a good amount of that s***, even on their own f***ing island by their neighbors in the DR.

@Cookies isnt wrong, a lot of harbored resentment is that Black immigrants have privilege over us and don't do anything to change it and pretty much accept that they are a buffer caste in the U.S.

Honestly it's a much more layered and difficult topic that probably isn't suitable for KTT.

The whole exporting and breeding thing actually explains why there is significantly less friction between Africans and Caribbeans

Beside music and vernacular I do think Black americans have a lot of culture from dances, literature, food, fashion, traditions, beliefs, etc. Sure some of these aspects might have African influences but I think they evolved enough to the point that it stands as it's own, I think new orleans is an example of such.

    @Nightmares

New Orleans culture is very different from the rest of Black America because they were enslaved by the French. There's similarities between New Orleans culture and Haiti for this reason.

Black Americans have rich cultures with various great things about it and some of us need to touch base with that. Black Americans by and large don't even practice Hoodoo at this point.

So if there's Black Americans who don't view their culture as much of anything, of course this is going to extend outside of the diaspora.

How's that an excuse? Who wants to be treated with racism by their own race? How would that not create resentment?

  • its always been this way

people who come from other countries in general look down on niggas

  • people immigrate to this country, work a regular job, put their children through college and say niggas are just lazy, ignoring the systemic barriers that were put in place to keep them down for decades

In the post I was replying to, they said that the u.s instead of just exporting more African slaves from africa to plantations in the Americas they opted out to just breeding slaves at home. So the culture ties to African was easier to be closed through the breeding in the u.s compared to the Caribbeans where new slaves still had African tie were still being sent
