nah we still got a few elvis fans, just check the best songs of every year thread. there arent many fans of 50s music here in general and i feel like a lot of the people who s*** on elvis just wouldnt like any music from that period and thats why they think hes the most overrated
beatles have a ton of fans on here
I figured the elvis hate comes from him being white and the beatles just being overrated to some people.
one of those genres that always just rubs me the wrong way for some reason (dont hate it as much now as i used to though)
i dont even like Nina Simone. and Tom Waits stuff in that style
as much as I love waits, im with @RVI his early jazz piano s*** doesn't do much for me outside Blue Valentine. He doesn't miss from swordfish on tho, even Bad As Me is great.
My taste in jazz skews more towards cool and easy listening varieties of the genre than the average music obsessive.
I'm pretty intolerant towards free jazz outside of Mahavishnu Orchestra and some of the more avant garde Miles stuff, but man do I love some Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek and Pat Metheny, not to mention pop/rock infusions like Steely Dan, Rickie Lee Jones and early Tom Waits. That's too saccharine for a lot of people but I love it.

Those first few Tom Waits albums saved my life and I'm not even kidding. Got me through some very hard times. I know every word.
What's great is that it's not like he stopped being one of my favorites, he just switched gears.

almost never go back to his first 2 albums, i guess since i'm so used to his new voice it sounds weirder
@Noir i see you only got 1 Fats Domino release rated on RYM
And it's the s***, I love Fats
Need to spend time with his albums

I've been digesting the Complete Imperial Singles compilation from him for the past few months. its already one of my top albums on last fm just because of the sheer length, 136 songs over 5 hours

Freaked me out too when i started his disco, cuz like everyone whos just getting into tom waits, I started with Rain Dogs
I've played I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love with You and The Heart of Saturday Night on guitar at restaurants, bars, those songs still hit
I do think Waits does that style well tho. So I can easily see why people love those early albums so much. I still have a few songs from those that I return to often.
only got 2 rock & roll albums rated on there, elvis first album and little richard's s/t
by the end of this year i should have enough to do a 150 from like 1940 (compilations)-1980. I have 40 rated so far

need buddy holly first 2 albums rated
The closing verse of this song is just the best
The neons and the cigarettes
Rented rooms and rented cars
The crowded streets, the empty bars
Chimney tops and trumpets
The golden lights, the loving prayers
The colored shoes, the empty trains
I'm tired of crying on the stairs
The build up and release of I'M SICK OF CRYING ON THE STAAAAAAIRS is the 80s music moment I'm currently obsessed with.

what are your favorite artists of the period so far? ive been getting into the early rhythm and blues like Ray Charles, Ruth Brown, Big Joe Turner, Roy Brown
Hats is a great album man
And this one, when it does actually rain in LA
Pure class. This should be as well known as all the staples from the John Hughes movies.
has anyone done the 3 cd waits album btw?
hell yes, one of his best releases honestly. especially the Bawlers disc of ballads. if it counted as an album itd be in my top 5

Yep. It's got a lot of content but more to love. Plenty for everyone. It's like Mule Variations stretched out and reorganized into separate discs.

of those decades in total or a specific decade? If you mean in total either Aretha or Nina. Coltrane could maybe overtake one of them but I have to listen to him more
need buddy holly first 2 albums rated
i’ve been meaning to for a while since there’s a buddy holly greatest hits literally on my wall in a case but never did for some reason
