idk i just feel like as the gens go on and we get into 3d all the added detail that goes into makes it feel too cartoony for me.

like i was 4 when i got into pokemon (G/S) and even if those worlds were basic and not very detailed it had loads of style and the lack of detail got filled in by my brain.

I'm sure part of it is nostalgia but its kinda like impressionistic or abstract art as well

so yeah for me gameplay + art wise HG and SS prob the best compromise you can get

Gen V was the peak. Game Freak has become more and more deceptive with each Gen after V. In Gen VI they said they'll never ever do DLC. 8 years later SWSH not only has DLC but a season pass.
