So you’re asking when did it become toxic but also acknowledging it’s always been this way

Was asking for more elaborate answers and opinions

But to address it. Turns out, when you open the floodgates to allow anyone can become a rapper, and there's no more middleman that can stop someone from getting in the door because of a past reputation (e.g. DMX was getting passed around labels for years before his debut because of his bad reputation) when you can just have a career independent.

you start getting niggas that probably shouldn't be rapping, becoming full on rappers.

not gonna lie I hate the idea of a gatekeeper in rap. I understand what you're saying but I don't think thats the way to solve any of these problems

    this but highkey.

Took out one of the few major "positive" rappers out of the equation and separated himself from the whole rap game due to his religious content.

There was always some of that in rap to some degree, but you add in the internet and a lot more voices can be heard and catch on than compared to 10+ years ago. Add on the influence of chicago and you got young niggas doing the same.

That being said tho it's not more toxic than any other point in time, if the 90s or 00s had social media and the internet you'd hear the exact same amount as you do now. Difference is it was less rappers and you only heard s*** if you bought a CD or had the radio on.

I never said it was a good thing to have. A lot of promising and aspiring careers in the 90s didn't happen because of that. I'm still mad Gumbo (proteges of Speech from arrested development) never got a chance to make a 2nd album.

    Delete this, very problematic thread

As always, it’s not rap that’s toxic, it’s reflecting a toxic country and culture and set of circumstances dipshit

You’re dead on about the reflection of their environment but now with everyone being interconnected you get a real peek into the lifestyle that these rappers go through.

I rock with you bro but this seems kinda goofy when niggas like Mubu Krump and Melly spent all day on IG live cracking jokes about dudes dying

    Von too lol

The only thing fatkademiks did was aggregate it in a more suburban friendly manner

I don’t agree with them doing it but pre AK it was just people involved doing most of the talking. Now we got fans wishing death on niggas just because they listen to Durk or Von. Anyone denying the impact AK left is just missing the point on purpose. If AK wasn’t on that lame s*** all this fan getting involved s*** would’ve died with drill in 2014.

    That's true.

Good response, surely in the 90's if social media existed, it would be extremely toxic too.

    this too ngl.

it's corny for Chance to write about his marriage (and granted, the Big Day was not a well made album) but it aint corny to rap about bodies that you nor your gang didn't even catch or even know? Or bodies of pretty much children?

is it oochie wally or is it one mic

Straight up, ppl quick to diss these type of rappers but then go and support the 1000th trap rapper who ain't no different than the others

Not dissing them but ppl who complaining about toxicity and fuel it is weird af

Thank you bro. Glad that you recognize the huge problem going on.

As viewers, we are truly watching s*** hit the fan and yet most people will not speak up about it.

It's even more disgusting that some people will go as far as to MEME it.

Well we have become lipstick alley of gangster rap... :/

“Omg bruh cmon go avenge Von!!11” like it’s a revenge arc on an anime.

Thanks for speaking up. I think we need to continue to dispel this behavior for what it is, because I’m tired of seeing young ones die and then we say “uhhhhh why are we glorifying their music again?”

I probably see it differently cause I was around before drill went mainstream s*** was mostly in city s*** and mfs wasn’t being lame and wishing death on niggas they didn’t know. After AK is when I noticed a shift.
