I'm not that invested in the arguement here but it's interesting how non-americans may prefer 'non-conscious' rap

Idk if that's even true honestly. Maybe in non-Western countries.
But Nas and the Wu Tang Clan just had a very successful world tour. Sold out arenas all across Europe and Oceania. Lauryn Hill is doing a show in Australia later this year and I'm seeing ads for it everywhere. In terms of locally produced hip-hop, the UK, Europe and Aus/NZ scenes all seem to be more conscious than the US.

”Mellowness and a huge focus on conscious health related lyrics and themes just actually bores me in a way whereas violent provocative music feels more fun. I feel like it’s almost just like a masculine dopamine thing. Guys might like stuff that helps them live out masculine power fantasies like an Arnold Schwarzenegger or Tom Cruise movie. Women and gay men typically don’t care as much.”

    someone kill me man

    The conditioning is so crazy

    There’s no way it isn’t a conspiracy

Societal pressures all line up to push the least healthy things

This is somewhat my personal opinion and somewhat not, but here what I’ve noticed:

    1. A lot of conscious music can’t compete with Twitter, YouTube, or a book. As an example, Kendrick Lamar and Lil Baby have both made songs talking about racism/police brutality but also mentioned black on black crime, which isn’t a real thing (race is not a factor, violence is always committed between people in closer proximity to you. This unfortunately mirrors a lot of conservative tactics). So frankly, there are smarter people and just a lot of different avenues to hear these ideas that people don’t need to get it from music.

    2. It’s actually natural for the response to trauma being to seek escapism. Now, lyrically some rappers made say the same s*** and rap about death or d****, but the type of music they make is less about paying close attention to the lyrics, and using the voice as an instrument that’s sound and flow compliments a beat, usually to dance or mosh to. This can be cathartic to a lot of people. Nothing wrong with that even if it’s not everybody’s thing.

anything that isn’t trap/drill music adjacent it’s dismissed as scaring the hoes music or dusty, anyone that tries to put effort into their music beyond standard d**** guns and perc talk is considered “fake woke” or “fake deep”

why don’t you take a stroll in the sales thread and see what quality of music discussion goes on in there

  • Aug 17, 2023

the mere existence of the sales thread on this site is to gas and hype up mainstream artists making “whip music”

KTT1 liked TPAB but KTT2 doesn't. Ironically the biggest people complaining about TPAB on this site are from the KTT1 era though. You know who, the usual suspects who don't even listen to hip-hop like that anymore but still come here to troll.

Did I say something crazy? Lol

    a) kendrick lamar clarified that he was speaking for himself vs the black community on that song

    b) naming Twitter as if it’s some intellectual hub of discussion and information is absolutely hilarious

    c) an artist being carried by the instrumental of an song is inherently less skilled or talented than someone who can be captivating on an instrumental that isn’t as flashy or layered, that isn’t even up for discussion as far as im concerned, so yes there is “something wrong with it” lol

  • Aug 17, 2023

all this thread really gives off is most y’all not even hip hop fans, y’all are pop fans lol

all of the greatest albums and artists this genre has seen were (or had) absolutely brilliant writing/pens, now we have niggas trying to excuse artists for being carried by instrumentals and/or dismissing people who actually put substance in their writing as “boring” lol under the guise “it’s everyone’s music” and im far from a conscious rap fan like that

no wonders i saw niggas unironically putting Future, Thug and Carti in their all time lists, y’all are the reason why this genre is in the s***ter

I think you’re reading too much into what I said, fam. Again, some of that is not my personal opinion, it’s what I’ve noticed.

    A. I don’t see how that clarification undoes the point of him mentioning something that isn’t real and mirrors a conservative talking point. I love Kendrick. Doesn’t erase that him calling himself a hypocrite in that song as of the two things were the same wasn’t dumb.
    B. I personally hate Twitter but we’d both be lying if we acted like there aren’t some smart people on there who start smart discussions. I could also include IG with its Infograph’s but I don’t think this is that deep to be hyper specific about.
    C. I never said it’s more skilled or talented, I said that’s what the music is going for and that’s what a lot of people like about it. I’m not sure where you got the idea that I compared skill level?

that’s a good way to avoid having to defend your position, by claiming that’s what you saw elsewhere

    a) it does absolve him, because he wasn’t saying “buh wuh buh black on black cryme” he was calling himself a hypocrite for protesting over Trayvon, in spite of him having killed someone lol even if it was brought forth out of bad conditions, it is objectively hypocritical

    b) nope.

    c) buddy, you said there’s nothing wrong with it; i think there’s something wrong with it. hence why im mentioning it and giving my reasoning as to why

My nigga I don’t quite see why this is a fight? We’re talking about ideas. I don’t really like “mosh rap” but I’ve spoken to people about what they like and why so that’s what isn’t my personal opinion but what I’ve heard people say. I really don’t think that’s a big deal or a suggestion of skill being higher or lower, just different. Why are we fighting? Lol

    A. I disagree, but again, I love Kendrick. I’m not calling him the worst person ever. I think calling yourself a hypocrite about two completely different systemic issues is short sighted and he’s smarter than that.
    B. That’s cool. Ive person seen some cool things from journalist and activist online but if you haven’t, that’s your experience. Again, I don’t see why that’s worth vitriol.
    C. Okay. But you really think there’s something wrong with people liking music you don’t care for?

I don't feel like some users not being into that type of music and some joking about it being dusty warrants this type of thread. By and large the site supports music like that. Like you can't open a thread for 5 seconds without someone telling you to listen to Billy Woods or Mavi or someone like that. People on here swear down albums like some rap songs or let the sun talk are the greatest rap albums of all time. Kendrick's followup to damn was probably a top 5 most hyped and in demand album on this site ever. I don't know what more you can want really

again youre being obtuse lmao discussion about those artists is largely limited to a small portion of users on here

the majority of this site isnt talking about niche internet rappers period let alone positively and u know that

niggas have been calling tpab critic bait and white ppl music since it dropped
