He got good albums but really got exposed as corporate cornball and not the enlightened “assata taught me” revolutionary he acted like he was.
Plus he dissed drake for absolutely no reason just corn
he was fire in john wick 2
Def weird he got killed off so quick, coulda been a cool recurring antagonist
What makes you say he doesn’t get mentioned? He’s definitely a legend in the game & has had several great moments & albums. He gets his credit & respect
Def weird he got killed off so quick, coulda been a cool recurring antagonist
He wasn’t killed off and his role wasn’t as an antagonist
It was simple business, and that’s why he wasn’t killed off by John

Unmemorable I suppose, my least fav JW movie

I think this is unfair
Common might’ve come off corny in certain situations but I don’t think that means he’s a fraud or anything like you’re implying
The formula got watered down when he started working with John Legend but he got to that point because he was good at making legitimately good and powerful songs about the issues
Why won’t we see the same “corporate” criticism for Jay Z?
Common was just trying to keep his career going while speaking on things he cared about. But that’s seen as more corny than pushing the typical message of d****, I wonder why that is?
If you ever thought he was a legit revolutionary that’s on you but he’s a thoughtful and progressive dude especially for his time. He got sucked into the modern liberalism but I’m not holding that against him that hard.
there were too many conscious rappers out at the time. he lived in the shadows of ye, mos def and talib.
Common is easily better than Ye and Talib lyrically lol.
Name that 20
There’s lowkey not 5 rappers with better catalogs but I do get the “compelling” argument, it’s valid
His album making puts him over people without stellar catalogs for me though. There’s solid and there’s stellar

This isn’t true. Common and Mos were the leaders of the backpack movement

it’s not unfair at all. How you gonna write a song about assata then double down on it in your biography then d***ride Obama and the democrats the politics don’t align.
I don’t say the same about Jay z cause Jay z spoke about selling crack his whole career 😂 I did call him dumb when he wore the Che shirt though
I actually had a customer who had Go! As their ringtone just the other day
The people still know
Niggas still got ring tones?

4:44 was jay switching up tho
For someone of his age I think falling into the Obama trap was easier than you’re giving credit for. It might not line up in retrospect but he’s not the only former supposed radical who was pushing Obama
It's okay to not f*** with Common or his music.
But some of these takes are terrible.
I swear...one of the downsides to Ye stannery dying off on KTT is that KTT is basically now ATRL 2.0 where many people judge greatness mostly off of sales, popularity, and "impact."
Who cares if Suzie soccer mom or casual rap fans on Tik Tok don't know who Common is or don't know about his musical contribution?
That should never be the basis for how you rank a rapper in a GOAT conversation lol.
Niggas really saying Common is too "underground" to be in a GOAT conversation.
Ya'll probably would've used that same argument against Rakim in favor of Snoop Dogg if KTT2 existed in 1994 lol.
Niggas still got ring tones?
lol man where I’m at ya ive heard some wild ones too
San Antonio Spurs/Tim Duncan status
Not flashy/commercial enough to get ranked higher
Cemented legend tho
there ya go

Jay has been a capitalist his whole career whether he talking about d**** or talking about his 40 40 club he’s been consistent in his message so I don’t get the comparison
This is a Common thread though so lmk when we in another rappers thread who shrouded themselves in Obama and I’ll let you know
but my conscious goat Lupe was never with the bullshit
Hes great and I actually listen to him a lot but he was always missing like one thing I cant put my finger on to be one of my GOATs
He got good albums but really got exposed as corporate cornball and not the enlightened “assata taught me” revolutionary he acted like he was.

Unfair assessment
I really don’t like how people will discredit peoples life work because they contradict themselves occasionally like humans aren’t living contradictions
