Yeah humans are walking contradictions sure I just don’t respect bourgeois blacks who make a name off being for the people then turn around become a corporate clown but that’s me
Even Lupe had Lasers and his whole weeaboo japan phase bro
Dont really like his voice

Lupe said on Lasers “Gaza strip was getting bombed Obama didn’t say s***” tf you talking about
Sometimes I think you guys werent aroind to see how big of a deal it was for Obama to be a legit candidate lol.
Also its way easier to judge in hindsight than when people were excited for what could possibly be and his early years.
That era and like Obamas first pre + first two years were different.
I feel like he just stopped making music and focused on acting. He could have went on a Jay Z type of run during that same time span. It could have been Ye and Common on watch the throne
He does
He never made poppy music so he's not as recognizable as Jay or Pac but any serious fan of rap puts him up there lol
there were too many conscious rappers out at the time. he lived in the shadows of ye, mos def and talib.
There wouldn't be a Ye, Mos, or Talib without Common
if you really look at it guys like drake, cole, cudi, kanye, kendrick those backpack type dudes all owe a lot to common
San Antonio Spurs/Tim Duncan status
Not flashy/commercial enough to get ranked higher
Cemented legend tho
Great comparison
Never had a stretch where he ran the rap
Game and his influence and impact aren’t as great as some of his peers. Has classics though
Never really transcended the artform like the top 10 GOAT rappers did, either solo (Kanye, em, Wayne, pac, biggie, nas, jay) or as part of a group (Ghostface, Andre 3k)
Common has always been a great rapper and he made great rap albums. But he never truly broke out of his lane and whenever he did try (the Drake beef, the electro s*** on electric circus or UMC, etc) it didn’t work for him.
I personally consider him top 20. Be is one of my favorite rap albums of all time but even then it’s not entirely because of him but rather that he happened to have prime Ye and Dilla production.
Dont really like his voice
He sounds like my dad if he was cool and didn’t leave me
It’s a vibe he pulls off well with that voice
i think common is never mentioned among the goats because he didn’t have a bunch of hits. he does have them too, but just not like people who are quicker to get mentioned in the goat convo (pac, big, hov etc)
but either way he has SEVERAL classics and a major impact
? His discography is kinda elite lol
people like this didn’t grow up in the culture and never took the time to actually check out stuff from before their era
they always expose themselves when you talk about the genre beyond the biggest names

I don’t think it’s a generation thing rather a mentality issue
I’m 24 myself and ive been knee deep into his discog

that’s what i mean, when i say “they didn’t grow up in the culture” it’s not about them being young, it’s about the fact that they don’t come from hip-hop.
i’m 26 and been aware of common my whole life but i didn’t go deep into trying to learn his catalog beyond the couple albums i witnessed as a kid until i became an adult. but because i come from this culture, i know already that he was never “just there” like the poster i was referencing said. but if you don’t come from this, you’d say something like that cause he can’t fill up an arena or do 500k first week. some things are just unquantifiable and you have to be around to get it
it’s a lot of people that speak on hip hop all day but if you ask about big L and his place in hip hop, they’d probably something say even worse than what dude said about common. i was 1 when big L died but just as a nigga in the culture i’ve learned about him and what he meant, it’s kinda impossible to not know certain things if you actually come from the world, even if it’s before your time. so i def agree, it’s not about age, it’s about curiosity/respect of the art form you’re engaging with
The original J Cole. He boring like that
Please stick to stupid Uzi threads and shut the f*** up

Facts. Saying Common just exists is wild to me lol
