Depends on which album/era you're listening to.

If you're listening to The Infamous, it was entirely produced by Havoc and Q-Tip. To me, it sounds a lot like most of the East Coast production of that era, but its clean af. Mixing is pristine as well. That album has great space for the low end imo (in terms of placement AND EQing). So where some albums from back then sound muddy and dated in a newer sound system, The Infamous still sounds crisp to this day.

I’m glad the Wu Tang heads beat me to the punch on this.

Havoc is great, The Infamous is an essential hip hop album period, but if you’re looking for a true mastery of that sound, listen to Enter the 36 Chambers or any Wu Tang solo album before Ironman.

90s production is severely under appreciated by younger rap fans

Sure there are some songs that sound dusty now but there’s also A LOT of s*** that was really advanced. From Memphis scene in general to stuff RZA was doing on Wu/members albums to jazz-oriented stuff from likes of DJ Honda to classic boom bap chunes by Premier. You can go on and on

The Infamous is one of the best produced rap albums ever idc if you had to give someone one single piece music that embodies the entire sound of 90s NY hip hop this album would be it

  • I actually heard a song on the radio a few months ago and thought "Damn, someone needs to sample this "

Googled the lyrics and it was a song called You are my Starship by Norman Connors. Mobb Deep had the same idea and sampled it on Trife Life
