    He’s right

Just here to say Mos Def is a greater rapper than Drake could ever hope to be before his demented stans come in here to start narratives

Drake has more great projects than Mos Def and that's a fact

Mos Def isn't most people though

True, this why my longer post after had to be made

But do you really believe Mos Def knows about Scary Hours 3 or how much Drake is rapping his ass off on Her Loss?

Yeah, Mos probably hasn't heard those Drake album cuts where he's talking about real s***. His exes, his possessions, his enemies, etc. It's Biblical

Yeah, what Hailey did to him on his Bahamas trip was some real Judas s***

He should know the biggest rap album of 2022

It really is. You really have to be a old old head to still arguing this point.

It’s true but that’s just because old heads are the only ones who still have principles and ideals on what hip hop should be, and aren’t just blindly following the money and success. Hip hop wasn’t supposed to be about who can sell the most there are philosophies and core tenants.

I don’t think 50 cent is hip hop either he’s rap. But he’s also closer than drake

    Ehhhhhhh

I feel you fam but Drake has entire singing albums, like a lot of people consider Take Care and FATD more r&b than hip hop (I’m one of them)

That definitely contributes to it, it’s not just the singles. The one thing Drake hasn’t surpassed Hov at is achieving that balance where you can get the purist love while still doing the pop singles. Granted jay actually got a good amount of flack from backpackers in the late 90s but still.

Drake has always been dead set against trying to please the purist almost on some rebellious s***, this just comes with that territory

Glad you said this cause I’ve broken this down in percentages with Take Care and got him straight rapping at 68% of the runtime

Is he stupid? Being so versatile that you can kill it in any genre and that you therefore release some pop songs doesnt mean u are a pop artist (which is what he said, cuz the interviewer asked him if Drake was hip-hop)?

If you think Drake is a pop artist then you don't know and don't understand hip-hop. F*** outta here, idiot

    @Brave This is why lmao

Shortly after the article was published, Drake hopped in ComplexMusic's Instagram DMs and left a suggestion: "Can you do an article now where the baddest Instagram girls in the world review my poetry book, not the head of the Mos Def fan club... Thanks 😂."

He’s entitled to that opinion and I understand that perspective coming from him

    Who cares

  • Jan 13, 2024

"Shopping with an edge" is insane

  • Also I would rate The Ecstatic as one of the great forgotten albums as we went into the 2010s era and that it should be more highly regarded

Mos Def is a purist so it makes sense that he wouldn't exactly see what Drake does as hop hop. That being said, that's his opinion. Drake came up on that purist hip hop.

People consider Lauryn hip hop tho and her one solo album is pretty much a rnb album

I love how mad the pop label still makes people in 2024

As if many of the most acclaimed, influential and successful artists in the world aren't making pop music

Drake has always been seen as an outsider to old heads cuz managed to dominate as a pop rapper without having to be completely HipHop

I hate when people vilify success. He acts like hip hop artists were going to transform a system when truthfully they sold it out before Drake was on Degrassi. Being a purist doesn’t pay bills or take care of 13 kids allegedly.

The end remarks made me think. He’s right on some level, what do we get from Drake/his music? Like from Kanye, I got some “socially conscious” stuff mixed in with your typical rap, but I think a main theme people get from Ye and his music is confidence & belief in self.

Idk what I get from Drake. I consume his music a lot but outside of “Drake n Drive” type memes earlier on, what am I really getting out his music? I gotta reflect on that
